M54 Wiring
Moderator: martauto
Morning all,
I am in the process of doing the wiring for my M54 swap, I think I have most of it worked out but one thing I am not sure about is the unloader relay. According to all the research I have done this should be wired in to pin 15 of the C101 plug, however my E30 does not have any wiring in pin 15 of the C101. Does anyone know why this is? Could it be because this is a pre-facelift E30? Any advice would be welcome.

Hmm interesting one, just looked at the wiring diagram for my 323 and it has nothing on pin 15. Looked at the motronic wiring diagram from a manual from early 325 days and that has nothing to pin 15 either.
I take it has the round C101 (although pin 15 is supposed to to the same on round and square plugs)
Just wondering if early cars had an unload relay, tried thinking back to when I started my 323 but so long ago can't remember what it did

My 1987 car had nothing on Pin 15 either, the unloader relay is there but takes the signal from the start signal wire (Black/Yellow)
I traced the wire from the relay back into the car, cut it from the common joint and then fed it through the fusebox to the C101, fitted a terminal and put it into Pin 15

Only a year has gone by since I was last looking at this.
Ok, so I thought I had the unloader relay thing sorted, but maybe not. I found the black/yellow start signal wire within the car and joined a wire to this which goes to pin 15 of the c101. Looking at the wiring diagram:
https://www.e30zone.net/e30wiki/images/ ... e30_84.pdf
I have taken a feed from the 2.5 BK/YL under where it says 'Manual Transmission' to take through the C101. Something is not quite right as when I try to start it the starter engages and turns the engine over but it does not disengage, it just keeps turning the engine over until the battery is disconnected. Also if I try to start it with the windscreen wipers on they keep on going, if the unloader relays are working the wipers should stop while the starter is working shouldn't they?
Is this a problem with the wiring or is it likely to be a problem with the solenoid in the starter? The starter isn't that old but then again it hasn't been used for a couple of years. I note that Dan mentions cutting the black/yellow wire from the common joint and then wiring it through to the C101, I haven't cut anything, could this be why this is not working as it should?

Sounds like you have possibly joined both ciruits together, like I said in previous post the older cars unloader circuit uses the starter signal Black/Yellow to activate the relays, so you need to change the way the ciruit works by disconnecting it from the Black/yellow and re-routing the wire to Pin 15
Hi Mate hope things well with you? If it makes you feel better my M54 is still in the E46 and I'm debating whether to do it at all
What are you connecting to the other side of pin 15 (C101) AFAIK it should go to pin 5 on the MS43 X6011?
Should that then go directly from pin 15 to the (0.5 Black/yellow) wire to the unloader relay but if you are joining (T-ing) to that wire then it is still going everywhere it used to and that may be the problem?
Other thing it might be is I read the unloader relay coils are grounded through the starter, are all the grounds good especially around the starter?
Couldn't get the 330 started for a while and it was a bad earth on the fuel pump relay, earths have a habit of causing weird issues especially when they have been standing.
Edit..... Dan was quicker than me

I recently made up a loom for my friends M54 conversion and found this guide quite helpful, the ECU pin out may vary depending on the version used, we used one from DG Maps

You are correct Dan, I had joined the two together.
Can you remember (even roughly) where you separated the pin 15 cable from the existing loom? I know the joint is somewhere between the fuse box and the C200 connector but any steer on where it might be would be very helpful.
Cheers

I have made some progress.
I found the common joint, separated the wire and connected it to pin 15 and the starter is now behaving itself, it still refused to start though. Then I realised I had failed to wire in a relay for the fuel pump so did that and it now runs!

Did you do first start Zone-Stylee with no exhaust?
Mine's still in the E46 but had the fuel pump relay fail, I was messing about with the EWS at the time and though it was that. Confused the hell out of me for a while.
