This update is for those of you still riveted to the slow progress of this eternal resto...

Sanding is progressing pretty well.. The worse part of the car is the rear pax arch..

Remember:

Image

Image

I had rebuilt it as best as I could...but it wasn't exactly a perfect match...

Image

Soooo....a few million years and lots of filler later....

Image

Image

Image

I have no idea how many times I had to go over this entire area...sand..prime...check..sand....aaarggg

Image

Almost there...

Image

Uh, no not really...

Nice work, but if you are blocking all the primer down, isn't it worth doing it with a compressor and less tedious as no matter how it sprays out, you are flatting it back anyway ?
Also, who and what's happening with the top coat if its to go over a rattle can paint ?

Well with cans no prep or cleanup is required... These new tips they have spray really well. And asking at the paint shop I wouldn't have saved any $$ by buying primer by the gallon to spray with the compressor...
Painting will be done in a paint shop by a pro. The car will be completely final primered prior to paint at the shop.
I have already bought the paint too. DuPont Chromax Pro.. Very expensive stuff but there is NEVER any money to be saved on paint IMO...

Just a few million things to do before that happens though!!

Despite the irony of having a cleaner version of the same car not 2 feet away from the car Im slaving over I just keep at it...

This rear arch is a complex fix.. Im trying to get this line right and the curvature of the arch above it... :(

Aaargh... getting there oh so slowly...

Ive already listed it for sale locally for the last month.. no interest yet...

I have already included info and a link to all you need to build it in my thread...

I would never do this without a rotisserie.. I spent 5 weeks under the M3 redoing the brakes/fuel/suspension without a rotisserie and it was hellish...

Well. things are getting serious..

Im at the point where its time to get the suspension back on and get this beast off the rotisserie (especially since its for sale!).. So here we go (again!)..

The M3 suspension overhaul I did last spring should make this a no brainer.. Everything is the same (except for front suspension geometry but lets not make that a big deal...)

So step one.. Front brace..reinstall...

Image

Id prepped the front struts last year and it was pretty easy to get the brand new bearings on... Dust protection plate on first! Doh! That would be an easy one to forget...

Image

I know youre supposed to press them in.. I very gently tapped them in and it worked fine..

Image

Bilstein B4 shocks..wish I had put these on the M3.. the b6's are honestly best for tracking...
I also put the nut on but only loosely.. final torquing will come later...

Image

Image

Image

Here is the setup with all the parts in the right order..Pure stock..old school in this age of coilovers but I like it...

Image

Dont forget to cover the bearings.. protection is always important..

Image

and on the inside too..

Image

A little persuasion for the springs... dont kill yourself doing this..its dangerous as f*^k..

Image

Image

With the springs compressed and everything in place put on the nut and use a torque gun to torque it on.. The shaft of the shock will spin but the gun will spin the nut faster and it will all work out... you should see 3-4 rows of threading beyond the nut once done..

Image

Image

Image

One down...

Image

Done..

Image

Nice eh?

Wow, just read through the entire thread. Great commitment to the resto and to writing up this thread! The M3 is stunning too, spent quite a while drooling over your interior winkeye , will definitely be subscribing :D

Slogging on...

Id bought new wishbones and came very close to donating them to the M3's suspension's restoration effort...but alas I had the nagging doubt in the back of my mind that maybe, just maybe I would pony up and go for the OEM aluminium ones despite the fact that I would never notice the difference either way...

Image

I did buy a set of M3 lollipop bushings.. These have the centering holes offset or "eccentric" which has the effect of shifting the wishbone slightly towards the wheel arch which increases the caster.. Simply put: more fun in curves. :D

See..

Concentric or standard bushing...
Image

M3 "eccentric" bushing...
Image

I had these pressed at a BMW shop I know..They were surprisingly tough to get on..

M3 bushing installed...

Image

Wishbone installed..
Image

Front end bolted in... Rack and pinion is not yet installed... That will be the e36 M3 unit I havent sourced from my parts car yet... :? That will happen after the paint job...

Oh look..no more rotisserie!!
Image

Looking nice!!
Image

Alrighty... What's next? The rear end... My favorite thing...just ask my wife... :D :D :D

Well, this next post will be deja vu all over again...

I thought Id get creative and put the rear beam in first..without the trailing arms or diff.. I figured it would be easier than putting the whole setup in in one go like I did with the M3.. The tricky part is jacking the beam onto the large bolts - it must be lifted equally on both sides or else it binds... honestly that's the hardest part of the whole operation..

Rear beam in place...

Image

Plates in place - the proper way...

Image

Image

Nicer than this remember? Shudder....

Image

These bolts:
Image

that go here:
Image

are splined and the shaft they sit in is splined to. When you put them back in they may spin which would make it pretty impossible to tighten the nuts on them later.. So, grab a hammer and a punch and tap them in, not too hard but fairly firmly.. This will lock them in place, problem avoided!

My bright idea had run into a snag.. it was going to be murder to get that bolt in for the trailing arm with the fuel inlet in the way...
Image

I decided to ignore that voice saying FORGET IT and instead tried and was then completely UNABLE to get the first trailing arm in its slots.. I hadn't anticipated that! CRAP!

So...
Image

*&$&@#!**!!!

Here was the issue:
Image

Solved:
Image

Image

Same issue on the other side! Bloody 'ell!
Image

Aaarg..my bright idea was a waste of time!!

Image

Hmm..maybe I can still do this without the diff in place... :)

Image

Image

If you do this the stupid lazy without-help way like Im trying here you will find out pretty quickly that that whole setup will not balance and will fall
off that jack in short order... Not saying THAT happened to me and that I swore like the Frenchman I am but it could happen to YOU!

Hi Norm, I have really enjoyed reading this thread and I did the same job on my iS last weekend. I built all mine on the garage floor first including the driveshafts and then used 3 jacks, big one under the diff and 2 smaller ones under each of the trailing arms. It is stable enough to raise onto the splined bolts without to much hassle even doing it on your own. I also fitted the anti roll bar before raising it as it is a major fiddle to fit that when all the other bits are back on. The quality of your work and dedication to record it is an inspiration to us all.
Cheers

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the kind words - it really helps keep me motivated especially since this is my first crack at restoring/working on a car and Im quite beside myself when Im told Im doing a good job!
As for dedication, well that's easy - the e30 simply inspires it. Its such a great car regardless of model.

As for your approach to getting the rear susp/diff in - you definitely got it right.. As you saw when I did it for the M3 - I got it right the first time too!! Go figure... :?

This time around however, I was being cheeky and a bit lazy...

I guess there's a lesson in humility in all this somewhere.. maybe... :D

Lots more to come... 8)

cheers,
Norm

I finally bowed to the inevitable and decided to do it the right way (as Jim kindly pointed out).. I pulled my diff out of hibernation, off the shelf where it had been sitting for over a year... Much to my disappointment light surface rust had started to poke thru the black paint.. I HAD NOT Por 15'd this one (incredible but true) as it had been painted by the transmission shop.. Soooo..guess what? Yup... Por 15'd it and then got back to getting the rear suspension in...

Image

Used two jacks and my son and his friend.. MUCH EASIER!

Image

Image

Amazingly I remembered to put in the rear sway bar...unfortunately only AFTER I had everything bolted in...

Im occasionally an idiot what can I say....

NEXT!

Image

Here is the stock setup with ALL the pieces you need in the order you need them.. Very easy thing for the DIYer... Get the reinforcement plate (the brass looking one). They are fairly cheap and strengthen the whole setup.. Plus they look the cat's meow!

Image

I also ordered the plastic sleeves and was a wee bit confused how they fit.. This is how.. That ring fits on the shaft and you slide the plastic sleeve onto it....
I know, I know: I am a genius...

Image

I started by getting the springs in... Ive fitted the disks only to get the wheels on.. I will be tackling the brakes later this winter..

Image

This was kinda tricky as the car weighs almost nothing... So I threw in the wheels in the back "seat" to get some weight in there.. This made it easier to jack up the trailing arm to connect up the dampener..

Sliding her in...
Image

Loosely screwed in...
Image

Closeup of the proper setup.. (nut is NOT torqued for now..)
Image

Done!!
Image

I AM a SUPERHERO!

Image

Uh.. kinda minor superhero.... ok, it just feels good you know?

Thanks Gents...

Soldiering on...

With the suspension ready to accept wheels I wanted to finish up the bodywork before I would have to bend over too much and put out my back... :D

At this point it was a lot of finicky touches that were required...

Image

Damn rear quarter too...

Image

Oops, forgot I have the rear panel to sort too... :(

Image

Thats a bit better!

Image

Almost kinda perfect...not really...

Image

Right.. I only did one of these didn't I??

Image

This one had more dents to sort than the first unfortunately..

Image

Rear quarter complete... :D

Image

DS rear quarter as well.. Im pleased with it...

Image

Image

At this point I took some time and hauled out the ugly bottlecap wheels that came with #2.. It was time to get wheels back on her for the first time in over 2 years!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Im pretty chuffed honestly but...

there's still work to do...

Image

Door done..

Image

Rear done...

Image

Parts done...

Image

Im done!!

The big day has arrived...

My brother's neighbour used to work in a paint shop but has since given that up and started a towing business.. How convenient for me!!

Image

His old boss let him rent the booth on the weekend.. We were alone and I got to help out.. Fantastic!

In the shop..

Parts went in first... Car still needed some final taping up..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Here's the booth.. All parts and car were given one last final light primer coat.. I would be stuck outside during the actual painting...

Here we go!!
