whats all the running in with a slushbox BS all about ??
fit it, run to 2K for 15 mins, bleed coolant whilst maintaining RPM
check oil and water level, start car again, whip up road in 1st, 2nd and maybe 3rd using ALL the rev range, no shortshifting BS, run from 2K to 5K in 2nd for 20 miles up and down the range, no labouring !!!!
rings will bed in in the 20 mins, nurse it for 1.5K miles and she'll be a slow one IMHO, runs the risk of polished rings and bores, remember Adam patchtons 2.8, nursed to 3K , always burnt lots and lots of oil.........

It took me about 15 minutes to talk him into it Dez, although I have since been informed Trevor and Barry have caught on and are on the case right now, en route to 'camberlaaay' as we speak in an anchored 5 series fully equiped with leather gag rope and extra sound deadening around the boot area. Ive heard they intend to rectify him with an OEM handbrake lever fully equiped with hand stitched M style handgrip and then if he still doesnt get the message its time for the alpina maple gear knob of shame

So we left off last time needing a new shell. I've been hitting this with an hour or two when i could. Usually in the evenings which was nice

So the shop got me another set of shells as thats all they could get. The company didnt want any back so they said if you don't want the rest of the new set they'd bin them. So i have a complete spare set now bar 1 shell! So not all bad eh?
With that in it was time to torque all this lot up. Main caps being non stretch and something like 70NM work your way out from the middle. The rods being 20NM and then 70 degrees once.

High pressure oil valve thingy its £50 note new!

Oil pump lubed up no point taking any chances. there was a tiny amount of assembly oil in it but not enough imo

oil pump on with spindle in too. 22Nm on the 3x 13mm bolts. I cleaned dried the threads and put a bit of thread lock on these. Can't hurt to be sure

nailing on all the fun bits. water pump, tensioner shiney bolts it all good

more bits! Crank sensor brakcet and A/C compressor bracket, engine arms, alternator/PAS bracket etc

Crank oil seals. Hopefully i've got them the right way round unlike last time on the touring engine remember!!!

So the last time i hope we see this lot. Its ready for the sump double check everything is on in there and tightended etc. Doesn't look much when its all clean new does it? Simple thing an M20 is really

This took a long while to get the sump as clean as this!

Gasket on. BMW might aswell of specced cheese for these. Well i'm trying andyboys tip of catrol LM grease. i have a large pot of it so......

Nows a good time to get that crank nose bolt on. BMW spec is 410Nm on these which is mega. My wrench only goes to 290Nm. So thats what its at now, i did the same on the touring engine and it hasn't fallen out......

This takes forever. 28 odd bolts 11Nm is the spec but i've gone 13 can't hurt lets hope it doesn't leak in 5,000 miles like normal. I'm not holding my breath are you?

i like this nothing is this clean normally on these!

Fitted the rest of this lot and thats the bottom end done. just the top end to go. I've not got the right tensioner rail for the alternator belt too, thats the PAS one opps.

no point in using the nice inlet and rocker as i don't have them at the moment either. So heres a spare i've fitted the refurbed injectors into.
Maching shop haven't done the head yet surprise. I was in there yesterday picking up the new head for the B3 and begged and said i am desperate for it! The shrick cam and valves turned up ages ago so the hole top end is here ready to go.
As always patience which i'm runing out of being this close to getting it done

The machine shop phoned today, new exhaust guides fitted and re cut the valve seats id finally done! Not sure on the bill or details but they've had it bloody months but i'm happy i can collect it tomorrow.
Might even with some luck have the head for the B3 back then i really won't know what to do! 2 top ends to do.
I reckon this machine shop have dragged this engine build out by at least 9 months between the crank grind and this head work. Hey ho, the bronzit is itching for its tempory 2.7 donk!

What did you use to get the sump that clean? I've just been on mine for about an hour and still a long way from your effort!
I was in Camberley a few weeks ago looking at a motor, I forgot you're from round that way.

Holy moly this is going to be a pic fest. The wife thinks i've left her!

This sack of sh!t needs livening up! Its like a slug but i reckon alot of that is to do with this...............

My educated guess is this is a 320 ECU as its no 325i one! Another safety tactic pete?!

Tidy time to de engine and auto box this thing

Stripping down everthing to come out.

nearly!

Out ya bastard. As said it shouldn't be a slug as its a 6E 2 donk. A BBR starchip will get it moving nicely when it goes back in

fairly grim in here

manual pedal box in. F**k me this isn't the funest of jobs. bloody thing, few choice words were used doing this

Punching the hole for the clutch master. Then it started raining so that stopped play here.

She's a proud chariot !
I swear, I have never chawed the ecu, does the ecu vin tally with the turd ?
That car goes well, I remember Karen wanting to see 130 clicks on the M40 test drive before she agreed to buy it ! She insisted on 150 or no deal on the 840 !
The things I do for money.
PS I like your engine hoist, I have its twin. I thought I was the only one with a hoist with no handles

And then as time has allowed i've been at the engine so heres the head

And the all the garb needed to make it all work

So finally a week before Crimbo i picked it up from the machine shop. Not without some serious nagging which i hate doing.
Well its had a reface from my old man 4 thou lovely. And then what the shop have done is fitted 6 new exhaust valve guides then re cut the seats for me. £160 all in, so why 4-5 months to do it!!
Any how, theres apparently 4 different size guides to fit in these heads from factory. You guessed it the stock size ones were too small. So its on no.3's so they say had to come from germany.

So onto lapping the valves in. This seems familiar! Thank the lord only 12 this time

6 done.............

Then all 12 whoop whoop.

Check the schrick valve springs!

The schrick springs are a touch longer compared to the OE ones. But i guess these could be a little shrunk now?! They are from PYF which had done over 243,000 miles when i recycled her.

So onto fitting the valve stem oil seals and springs etc

Ready for those bloody collets! my big hands don't lend well to these, but they are twice the size of the 24valve ones.

On! 11 pairs to go then

voila

This interested me, not sure why but i took a pic. Exhaust guide obvs!

While i was at it i took this, a fettled inlet port. I thought this is my last chance i hope. Big power baby come on!!

With some magic and plenty of dropping collets on the floor we ended up here ready for the camshaft

And the all the garb needed to make it all work

So that was the end of that night. Its enough to drive u up the wall after a while!

Behold the stick. 284 inlet 272 exhaust. Kitty loves this cam so its another for the 2door

lubed with the assembly lube

Camshaft in and ready for some rocker shaft and rocker action

So all the rockers need to be built up, this is the way the eccentric goes (i hope)

One built up eccentric this way to its pulled down to tighten the clearance and up to loosen them off.

Even this takes time!

New shaft sir suit u.

The febi ones are handly with this but plug feature, means you can turn them once installed which helps greatly with the locking tab which comes later

The easy 6 in.

Always best to "insert" shaft from the rear
on the second one. So you can fit the spocket on the front and turn the cam innit

like so

So there we have it, locking plate in also. Don't forget it! Ready for the head to be bolted down. Also the cam is turned to TDC before i install it.
Which had to come another day, and i also have to eat me dinner so i'll be back.....................

So today today has been a big day!

new locating tabs

I thought i'd go genuine on the gasket on this one. I've tried the Euros GSF ones. Now they're fine but they all end up with an oil leak here in short time

It happens here on this corner of the block. On the main oil gallery. They all do it after a while, some really p!ss oil out if here though.
So lets hope genuine holds it for a long time! not 10,000 miles like aftermarket ones

Gasket on, now heres another difference i noticed. The BMW one is sticky both sides! you guessed it the GSF/ECP ones aren't

Head bolted down, starting to look like an engine!

So this bolt for the camsprocket needs to be 60nm and a dab of thread lock can't hurt here. Well this is how i get them done up. Hold onto the mole grips. You could wait until the belt is on i guess. Thats an old cambelt before someone says!
Now i didn't notice at this point that the plastic disc was broken!!

Swapped for another from stock. Now another tip is make sure this disc loactes properly or you'll have starting dramas! See the little brown nipple at 4-5 o clockish? Easy enough to get this wrong

Ready for the cambelt, tensioner pushed in.

belt on, tensioner tensioned like. I went for genuine belt too. Euros do conti belts without the BMW logo on them!

D rubbers in, spray bar. And also with the belt on and head torqued down now is the ideal time to set the valve clearances.
I've gone 0.25 inlet and exhaust as i'm going to be running this in on the spare Alpina exhuast i have with a log manifold. Might stop one chasing the redline too much, or not.
Should sound fruity

studs, rocker gasket, cover and nuts on

Timing covers, vibration damper,rotor on

These NGK's rule on these M20's. So plugs in and exhaust studs. Makes life so easy when fitting the gaskets and manifold on in the bay. Theres enough room in the engine bay

Inlet studs, gaskets

Inlet on, thermotstat housing on - half of it

Getting carried away and nailing everything on. I've had to use the bronzits auto engine
loom because i can't find the f**king manual throttle body. It will run fine but the throttle position swith on autos uses a different plug to manuals. Not sure why but they both work the same as long as the plugs and TPS match. You can waste bloody hours looking for sh!t. It will appear just not when you want it!

Its built! Marathon effort as always and this donk has taken some serious time and money. I dread to think what its cost to get it this far. You could have a very nice car on the drive. You won't believe me but i couldn't find a waterpump pulley so had to chaw the rusty crap off the bronzit engine also!
]
Now at its final place nearly! Well ready for 2moro if the weather is ok to drop her in.
Getting exciting now

]Now at its final place nearly! Well ready for 2moro if the weather is ok to drop her in.
