Bad luck bud - you're right, 3 massive failures at the same time is quite rubbish. No way it can happen to you twice though right! Take a few days off of cars and go back to it.

Sh*t me up about the clutch though! I've also found I have one of those, after I'd fitted it and I was hoping it would be okay, subject to being replaced earlier than I might otherwise have to. Hopefully that was a mega-rare freak clutch failure and not something down to the application in which it was being used :(

i'm surprised by the oil pump nut I've just rebuilt the pump on my B3 and its the same. The thread is a left hand one, which makes sense as it rotates anti clockwise compared to the clockwise rotation of the engine. The crank nose nuts are threaded right handed, so neither should come off as the rotation keeps them tight.

I'd suspect someone has been there before? that oil pump nut is supposed to be 47Nm

See how quick the oil light goes out 8)

Sounds to me like the crank bolt hasnt been tightened up, and its broke the woodruff key.
Will find out when Mick gets round to stripping it down

been on trying to bleed the air out for over 2 hrs today, thought i was there and went for a short drive to the local shops ,it was ok on the way there but going home i noticed the temp gauge going up so free wheeled it down the hill to my house with the engine off and noticed water on the ground.after a quick check the leak was coming from a hose i used with a bolt in the end to blank off the small metal cooling pipe that runs off the main one on the m52.i changed the pipe bled it up again and went around the block and the same thing happened again .

fook it...i'm having a beer !

Oil pump sprocket nut coming loose is a common problem on the S50. When I bought my S50, the first thing I was told to do was undo the nut and loctite it back on. The nut was only just finger tight on mine 8O
Afaik, the advice was mainly for the S50B32, but luckily I checked it on my B30 anyway.
The M50/52 uses the same pump as the S50B30, so I always loctite the nut on just to be sure.

just sat with it ticking over with temp gauge on half way and fan kicking in but...

as soon as take it off the drive and go 300 yards it's pressurising ,the pipes are getting rock hard and the temp gauge is up over the 3 quarter mark .it seems running the engine is creating air in the system which i'm now leaning towards the head gasket being fooked ??

well it's fooked as i thought yesterday but had to try again today and also confirm my suspicions.

the head gasket is shot, the engine is fully bled before starting it with the front up in the air to help get the air out.after running it for a short while the pipes are rock hard and you can feel the air banging about inside them, shut it down undo bleed nipple let out loads of air,top it up if needed and try again.i've done this over and over as you don't want to admit it's fooked but it's time to stop wasting water and fuel and declare it back to square one!

not sure how much more i'm gonna put up with before a huge fragfest happens !

My first M52 was doing this, it would bleed up fine when ticking over on the drive but as soon as i went out it would start filling the system up with air, when i undone the bleed screw it was more like froth than bubbles.

iirc when i stripped it down a couple of the head bolts were loose/threaded.

just got round to taking the head off today as my life [yes i do have one] got in the way of the cars work for a change .

it all came apart without issue and there are no visible cracks in the head :D
it looks like the head gasket has gone on cylinders 3&4.there were water marks in the cylinders here and a small amount of water in both .

Image

Image
^^^^^^^
Craigeeb inspected this [white mark/line] fully as his block was cracked here and it's not cracked and appears to be a water stain.

thanks again for your time today Craig :thumb:

the head will be delivered to Northern re-bore on Monday for a pressure test and skim and if all good then a new gasket and set of head bolts later i should be able to actually drive it instead of walking past it every day and driving the family bus instead .
