I have just read this tonight

If your MOT expires during the Covid – 19 pandemic

The Government is advising that people should stay at home and avoid travel unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you are at home, the advice being provided is not to take your vehicle to a garage to obtain an MOT renewal unless you are a key worker and need to use the vehicle to travel to work. MOT tests for buses, trailers and HGVs have already been suspended and the Government has now confirmed that all cars, motorcycles and vans which would usually require an MOT test will be exempted from needing a test from 30th March 2020. However, vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition and drivers will be prosecuted if they are driving unsafe vehicles. Legislation will be introduced on 30th March and will come into immediate effect for 12 months.

HELL

Mart.
Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.

So essentially they temporarily relaxed the law on MOT's. That's definitely a positive approach to the situation rather than just had out fines to people left, right and centre like they have been in other countries....

MOT testers just lost their income, I bet you in 6 months time there will be a lot of cars failing their MOT's so they can recoup the lost money.

i reckon they'll be a few "friendly" mots being done as well to make a bit more money quickly.

A kick in the teeth for mot testers, but I guess its ensuring their safety at the same time. However, why on earth does it need to be in action for 12 months!!

Doubt it, the councils will still want their pound of flesh regardless.

mmm, I read it was a 6 month extension to mots from 29th March .... it helps me as I'm in Germany with a UK car - mot due 15th april - but can't travel for this due to lockdown here.

I was about to ask my insurers what the situation would be, but an "extension" of 6 months to my existing mot would sort thsi out as technically my insurance would be void without an mot.

Why not register the car in Germany?

Just for clarity if your MOT runs out on or after 30th of March 2020 you will have 6 months added to your current MOT but it could take some time to update the system. So paultv will have a current MOT until 15th of October 2020. Any MOT that expires between (currently) 30th March 2020 and 29th March 2021 will have 6 months added.
Have some links to Gov website:

For anyone that needs an MOT before 30th March you still need to book an MOT

We had ITVs (MoTs) suspended a week or so ago, same thing as UK basically, BIG plus here is ITV stations are not connected in any way with repairers, only do independent government tests, so no bumping up failures to make more money for testing garages.
Everyone has the right to reach the level of their own incompetence.

If your car is out of MOT then you are still liable if you are in an accident and I believe you still have to notify your insurance company that the car has no MOT, I bet there will be a £25 charge for that one.

Dream on! Local council have been ordered to pay me and many others £10k for loss of business over the next few months. I expect they'll be quite keen to claw that back by all means conceivable.

They'll want it back quicker than they paid it out, there's always a double edged sword with local government.
