lower steering column

anyone out there know if it is possible to lower the column - like on modern BMW?

Lowered one of mine by about 3/4" a few years ago. Biggest problem is undoing the headless bolts that hold the column bracket up.
I usualy weld something on to the bolt head to start them.
Once youve got them undone, force the column down to twist the bottom bracket a little, so that nothing is stressed in the column's new position. Make up your spacer and refit with longer bolts.
Finally check under the bonnet that nothing is being stretched or strained.
