or is it bloody hard to change from 1st to 2nd gear???
i unerstand that when the cars cold its going to be a bit lumpy but 9/10 times i cannot get that 2nd gear to go in
also this seems to happen 7/10 times when the car has been run for a while.

I find that my gear box can be a bit 'lumpy' and I'm told that it could be due to one or two things (but then I'm sure other suggestions may be forthcoming).
1) the incorrect grade of gearbox oil, which can cause probs when cold as the viscosity is not as it should be
or
(as I think is more likely)
2) the seals in the clutch master and slave cylinders are getting worn out thereby not fully disengaging when you press the pedal.
I'm going to have my master and slave changed at next service to see if the gear change gets sorted.

cheers for the reply paul
the master cylinder was renewed about 500 mile ago, so it must be the gearbox oil???
my car gets serviced in another 10k miles, so might just wait to see what they say.
cheers

forgotten when it last got serviced, but my local specialist said that it wont need servicing for another 10,000 miles. so they stuck a sticker on the "black box" and it says "next service due at 84,290" and im now on 75, 065.

I wouldn't personally go more than 5000miles between services. Normally less personally.
I normally do small service at 5k, and big service at 10k. Sometimes an oil change inbetween too if I've got the spare cash.
10k is lots of miles to do in an old car without a service.

MIne's really difficult to get in to any gear when cold, and when warm it's difficult to get in to first whilst moving, but I suppose thats typical of any gear box. I'll have to change the oil at the next service. Having the Z3 short shift probably means I have to use more effort too.

Just a thought? Was the slave replaced as well (and were they both new?)? In my limited understanding of these things, the seals degrade with age and therefore can't maintain enough pressure to operate efficiently. If the master was shot, then the slave probably is as well.
New master and slaves are only a few tens of pounds each.
Maybe a more technically minded bod could add to this??

okie dokie, looks like i better get myelf a haynes manual then dave. lol
how much of a difference does the z3 short shifter make widge? i dont think ill put one in the 320i as i wasnt planning on using it for racing really.
righty i see paul, just the master cylinder was replaced as i got stuck on the side of the motorway with it lol. is there any way of visibaly finding out whether the slave needs replacing mate?

I think it's unlikley to be the master/slave cylinders. My brothers 325 cab has had the master cylinder seal go, and when the go you know about it just think of the pressure there is in there! On his car you'll got to press the clutch and it won't disengage unless you pump it. If the slave is leaking fluid it would drip under the car, and you'd be needing to top it up.
I think a more likley answer, although not the one you want, is worn synchros / old degraded oil in the box. If the baulk rings tend to go it makes it harder to get in to gear but the synchro cones still work so it won't grind.
PS the short shift is great, I'm going to upgrade to the 2.8 Z3 lever in the summer, and put the 1.9 one on my bros cab. It's a worth while drivability upgrade, not nessicarley for racing!

okay well i havent noticed any leaking fluid under the car and i havent needed to top it up.
i think worn synchros is the most probable answer widge, and the car is 16 yrs old, so maybe im just expecting too much?
sounds good mate! might even put it on my "later on to do list" lol ive still got a zone chip and piper X viper induction kit to put on yet! but i dont think im gonna bother fiting them till i get the big bore throttle body.
how easy is it come about getting a z3 shifter then widge?

My 'hearse' is the same, hard to get into 1st/2nd when the gearbox is cold, but ok when it warms up.
Try just changing the oil in the gearbox, could simply just be the oil is crapped up. I might change mine this weekend, will let you know if it helps or not.

If the clutch cylinders are shot you will notice the fluid level drop. if it's the master it can leak down behind the carpet and rot it and the paintwork.
(if it is don't buy the cheap alli one there shit)
If it's the slave it can run into the bell housing and ruin the clutch plate.
If you put it in first and hold the pedal down for a few minuets you should be able to tell by the bitting point moving to the bottom of the pedal travel.
If you hold it down longer the car should start to creep forward.
Have you checked the gear linkage for play as you say it still happens when the engine is warm?
