Hey just wondering if any one had any advice on how to get my M20 out of my car and put an M50 in, whether it is easier take it out of the top or the bottom if it makes any difference i have access to an over head crane and a fork lift.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks Matt

Out through the top, but it nearly has to be stood on end to come out.
A load leveller is a good investment.

I agree...

I took an M20 out through the bottom thinking it would be easier.. Turned out OK but after putting one in through the top, I'd do it that way in future. A load leveller was EXTREMELY useful and not too expensive.

There's not necessarily anything easy, or for that matter difficult about it. It's just a case of very carefully adjusting the position of it as you carefully lower it in. Drop it in with the box attached as it's a pain to fit to the box in situ. I managed without a load leveller and just adjusted the angle of the car instead by jacking it up to change the angle, and then when the box was approacing the floor I put a jack under that and jacked it up as I lowered the crane and slid it into place. It would have been much easier with a load leveller but certainly possible without one.

I got my M30 & box in from the top easily enough with no load-leveller... can't see why an m50 would be any more of a struggle! :)

Fitted my S50 and box using the crane and load leveller with no problems, was a bit tight, but its goes. The M50 and box will go in just the same.
As Ste, said it possible without the leveller, but much much easier with one.
Even with the leveller, I jacked to back of the car a bit just to reduce the angle the engine needs to be at.

See the sticky thread 'M50 Developments' in the engine swap section mate... EVERYTHING you need to know is there (but it is quite a long read!).

I'm using 325 prop & diff with my conversion, the M50 has a 318is gearbox mated to it using m20 flywheel & clutch
