As alot of you know by now either the head gasket has gone or the head has cracked on my Sport.
Rather than pay some muppet hundreds to do it I thought I'd give it a go as chances are I'll never work on an old and relatively simple engine again.
Alot of people who do this stuff all the time will probably laugh but I thought I'd put up some pics to let people who have never done the job before see whats involved.
Ive got everything off now, just need to take off the head studs and then take the head apart before taking it away to get pressure tested.

Dirty complete engine. (will be painted before going back together).

Inlet manifold off. Easy job but just takes ages getting everything off.
Image

Next up the fan which was a bugger to get off. Took lots of heat and two of us smacking the hell out of the spanner to loosen it.
Image

Image

Fan and covers off its time to get the timing belt off.
Image

First need to take off the bottom pulley to reveal the full belt and slide it off.

Check out the mayo inside the rocker cover!
Image

To reveal the next step - taking off the head and stripping it.

Mate whats going on? My head, inside the rocker cover wasn't that colour!
Mine was just sort of lean with oily sheen and black oil in places, your's looks like some one has been filling the car with Old Teak wood stain

Otherwise good job, more people should do this stuff for them selves, it's not that hard :D

Tell me about it! Looks like years of crap oil caked onto it just. It should clean off easy enough.

Yeah if you like elbow grease! Cos you'll need a hell of a lot on that.

A bit more wont do any harm. Ive already spent ages cleaning the inlet manifold and various other parts Ive taken off.

Pot of gunk or hyper clean should get that lot off with out doing any
damage to the metal! Hyper clean just as good but cheaper than gunk!
oh and a decent brush! should sell allthat at your local motorist centre
nice and cheap :D

Creative use of blu tac there, I'd give you a 7.8.
It is not a valid engineering solution thought, even if you did get away with using it in woodwork

Nope, my fault, the jokes are getting even worse and less funny than they normally are, I think it's cos it's late.

Anyway, back to the topic! :D
Got the head off tonight and the gasket looks ok so I guess its time to get the head tested and expect bad news.
Heres a pic or two:
