insurance?
Moderator: martauto
I'm sick of insurance to be honest with you. I own a 318i coupe, I'm 20 (okay granted I've only been driving 6 months!) but it's not overly quick, it's safe and secure(ish).
Before this I owned a SEAT Ibiza MK1 (1989) 1.5 (100BHP) and for what it was, went like s**t off a shovel, long ratio gears ment you could rag the nuts off of it and could quite easily make 95/100 in 3rd (not that I did much as it scared the living daylights out of me) with a bit of poke left in it. The thing is, that car was a death trap.. No safety features what so ever, was like driving round in a tin of baked beans.
I got insured on the SEAT for £700.. My insurance company wouldn't touch me on the BMW for love and more to the point nor money, said it's too sporty and it's to fast, I proceded to explain my car I own at the moment was just as quick and if not more dangerous but they wouldn't have it (I do realise it goes on crime statistic, lure factor and what not but still..).
In the end I got eCar insurance for just under £1.5k... Third party fire and theft.. Fully comp was just over 2k. But they are the only people who would touch me on my BMW.
There is no cheap insurance if you're my age and want a nice car.
Anyway, that was a bit of a rant and in answer to your question. If it's an older BMW, try some classic car insurance. Adrian Flux etc.

E-car are the Kanine Undercarriage. insured me on a 2.8i special capri for under 1500 quid at 19 with six points. and that was a properly rapid car!
elephant.co.uk are pretty good for e30s and young drivers its seems... my fully comp quote on there is 981 quid. which is not too bad for me at all

yea under your dads name... really you want too be earning no claims discount...
plus if you have a smash (and lets face it most people do at 17 even if it just a little one) under your dads insurance he will lose his no claims and have a claim on his policy and that will cost him dear when he comes too reinsure. its just not worth it IMO...
get some no claims under your belt and the prices just keep dropping...

You find something that I could insure for £1500 on my own name!
Already had a little accident... well the handbrake failed and rolled off the drive. And I wasn't even in the car.
If I could build up my no claims then I would but I just can't afford the insurance on anything! Even a 1.0l Corsa!

the car might be safe and secure but in the eyes of the insurance company its not the car thats the main problem its the driver. 6 months driving experience at 20 is going to cost you dear.Ian_M wrote:I'm sick of insurance to be honest with you. And I do realise being 20 and 6 months experience is going to cost me but my other car didn't however cost me much being just as quick and a lot more lethal in my eyes.

Insurance is strange anyway, i had problems insuring my Cecotto because it was a group 20H, it was an import, it was LHD, and it was modified.
I could two companies that would touch it and one of them backed out, the quote was for just over 700 quid fully comp, but just doing ramdom quotes on line one day i could insure a Porsche 911 Turbo for less!! How doe s that work?, its a funny old game

I'm with Firebond who have just been taken over by Footman James.
Pay roughly £230 for the year on a 318is valued at £2k (switched over from my Pug 205 a little while ago) but there were at least 4 quotes below £250 fully comp.
HIC were cheapest, elephant not far behind but that was a standard road policy, HIC and Firebond have it insured as a classic.

The trick is to just keep getting quotes and playing them off against each other. My little brother insured his E30 M3 for under £1k when he was 19. I think if you're paying £1.5k TPFT on a 318i you're insane.
I pay £500 fully comp, full European cover, protected no claims with all mods, including engine swap, declared and I have track cover including the 'Ring.
When it was still a 325i, insurance was £180 fully comp.
So, although you youngsers don't have hair growing out of your ears, being old does have it's benefits.

Insurance makes no sense. Bear that in mind, & be willing to spend ages on the phone (start with HIC, flux, firebond etc), & you'll nearly always get a good quote. Mine's under £400 now, with everything declared etc. They were willing to do that with no no-claims on the policy too (was going to put it on my other car). It actually says on my certificate that I'd be covered for any BMW engine, but I don't think I'll push it just yet! & plenty of companies came back with the £1k+ quotes this year too...
A few years ago, one company explained to me that a Capri 2.0S was 50% more than a 2.8i, 'because it was an S'. I'll say no more... other than that's almost as ridiculous as what you're spending Ian - get a 1.3 golf or something FFS!

E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...
Forgot to add I have agreed value on my policy too. No arguing if the car is knicked or is a total loss - just a nice cheque. Well worth considering if your car is older and in good condition or interesting. Saves arguing with an idiot on the end of the phone when they offer you £800 for the E30 you've spent thousands on.

£1250 for a 1998 328i sport from elephant.co.uk. not bad for 19 year old, fully comp. with 6 points is it?

I would recommend A-PLan, they gave an insanely good quote for me on the soarer, £296 fully comp, not bad for a 4.0L group 20 car
