ive had my bm for about 5 years and not really bothered with it too much. only bought it to pull chicks tbh and its only dawned on me now that it wasnt the car it was my super sharp witt and dashing good looks that did it  anyway, i joined this forum not too long back to see if someone knew what my engine problem was and not really being mechanically minded was just hoping for a bit assurance that it wasnt going to cost a bomb. bearing in mind that id never done work on my car before, ive -

changed the thermostat and housing
replaced a sensor
replaced the radiator
fixed my electric mirrors
fixed the central locking
fixed the front fogs
installed a car alarm with remote window rollup
fitted a chip
and a bloody good service

how? because of you guys. plain and simple. id never would have attempted that lot otherwise. this is one of the best forums ive been on. ever. great people, great advise simply.............great!
so id like evryone to give themselves a pat on the back for being..... great!

regards

Well said Elliot!

I wholeheartedly agree, although I haven't done as much work on my car as you. Do you have a drive or garage to work on the car......or are you stuck with the road....like me?!

hey widge
the rad was what was giving me all the problems so i must thankyou for putting the suggestion in my direction :thumb: just gotta try and get all the air out of it now which is alot harder than one would assume :?
the rollup window was a bit of a let down tbh. they go up in 4 inch movements with the alarm bliping on each bit. was kinda hoping it would do it in one full motion but i guess it doesnt know how far up or down the window is, so i guess it stops the motor from burning out. dead easy though just a case of splitting the switch wire from each switch and having a signal from the alarm.
ive got a couple of things i wanna do and the timing belt is one. is this a complex thing to do?
deffo gonna have the valves adjusted but i may get my local garage to do that, 45 inc vat which i thought was pretty reasonable, not sure i feel confident enough to mess around with the inside of the engine yet.
@ Danstable
i dont have a garage or a drive either mate stuck on the road but its a cul-de-sac so its pretty quiet and i can park right next to my back gate. problem is its on a hill so any fluids tend to get badly judged as it all goes to one end or the other :(

No probs mate, as I said the rad is always the first suspect in over heating, shouldn't be too hard to bleed, there should be a nipple to undo on top of the thermostat housing. Let the engine run and undo it till it just pisses water.

The timing belt is easy except for undoing the viscous fan, if you need some pointers when you do it just drop me a line. As for valve ajusting - I did mine and it sounded even worse so I took it for the local guy to do and it sounded much better, they do that sort of fiddly stuff every day so it's hardily surprising.

Windup windows sound a bit pants :( I thought they'd go all the way up  but well done for all the stuff you've done.

yeah thats kinda what im thinking too. will be nice to get rid of that tappy noise or at least make it sound less like a moped with a big exhaust :D

will do matey, i would really appreciate that :)
as for the bleeding scenario i m doing just that with the bleed valve but im sure theres more in there, had a check this afternoon and the fluid level had dropped in the bottle, went to get some water and by the time id come back it had risen again :? a bit of a strange one that

Elliot - with the engine running and the cap off the rad or expansion tank, just squeeze the big top hoses coming off the rad and same at the bottom, this helps to push any air locks up to the expansion tank. Once the lid is on, the system becomes a little pressurised, so I am guessing it would just circulate any air locks until they end up in the expansion tank?

Am I wrong here guys?

If the bleed valve is not working properly, you can undo the expansion tank from the wing and raise it up with the top off which will get rid of air bubbles/locks. Careful if it's hot though!

Just drop me an email when you're going to do the timing belt and I'll point you in the right direction. I did 3 over the easter, relatives and friends kept on producing 325i's that needed the timing belts doing
Got the last one down to 4hrs inc coffee.
