battery breather?????

Hi zoners, took out battery and tray today.car is tech 1 sport, to check,and polish below it ,was well pleased as is as new. But there is a small white plastic sqaure bottle with plastic pipe coming out ?what is it?a breather for battery??is it best left out as fills the bung hole at bottom. thanks ray

Batteries produce hydrogen. Internal batteries need a vent system for the hydrogen.
I blew up a mini pick up once (battery behind the driver's seat) whose battery was being fast charged. Fortunately, both doors were partly open and no damage was caused!

Certainly wasn't smoking - I've always considered setting fire to a rolled up tube of dried weed in your mouth to be totally ridiculous!
Was a long time ago, but IIRC, I pulled the charger leads and one of the clips came off the battery.
It was a loud pop, a sudden blast of air, and the doors flew open. No flame or heat that I can recall.
