Whats BBTB?
Big Bore Throttle Body.
Some people think this does nothing though.
With the M42, a re-map / chip is probably the only thing worth the money.
Cams are expensive for what they yield, exhaust - again opinion is divided and even Performance filters have been seen to reduce power in some cases.
So before you go throwing loads of money away, think about what you want (and need) and theh go that route.
If it's lots of power then you have to go Forced Induction.
I have not mentioned engine rebuild as lighter pistons, hotter cams, ti-con rods, capacity and compression etc is insane money for an E30 318iS.
I would go with a re-map and perhaps the BBTB as it shouldn't set you back more than £500 for both - then if you still want more - you may have to get a new engine / car.

take a look round the evolve zone shop, you can get some well priced engine mods there.
a stantard e30 318is runs at 136bhp so if you start pumping stupid brake out of it things will start breaking so think about the bottom end con-rods etc...............thats if you go crazy with mods

if you go for air filter its best just to leave standard box on but put a k&n pannel filter in.i tried induction kit found i lost power so changed back & fitted pannel filter much better.

First easy mod is the heater plate removal. You get some instant gains without having to spend any money. There are several threads on here even a technical article I seem to remember
This is next on my list when I get the time.

This sounds good and makes sense in theory so I'd try that for sure (think I will!).mick_318is wrote:First easy mod is the heater plate removal. You get some instant gains without having to spend any money. There are several threads on here even a technical article I seem to remember![]()

The cone filters always confused me as you have channeled air into an enclosed space with the AFM box set-up versus a round cone thing that is just gathering whatever air manages to make it's way through the grille.
I wonder if an enlarge intake from the grille to the AFM would make a difference - like some massive duct tubing or something...
Made of carbon...
With 'CSL' written on it...

That said the M42 is a very understated engine and crys out for a few mods, i have just fitted the Zone chip to my ECU and there seems to be more usable power through the rev range, i wouldn't say it produces anymore power though.
In my opinion, i would try one thing at a time, next on the list for me would be the BBTB, i have heard mixed reviews on the benefits in removing the heater plate, but it seems to be a job to be done at the same time as the BBTB.
I would say that before you attempt any mods, make sure the engine is running at it's best in standard form first, check the engine breather hoses are not split (under the inlet manifold, mine were) and clean out the throttle body and remove and clean the Idle control valve (use brake/clutch cleaner or carb cleaner), new plugs, new/clean airfilter and oil and filter change.
Last and not least, the M42 is still giving around 34MPG, how's your MPG Nath

buzzy little M42 out great big heavy M20 in!!
Expensive Twin cam wrongness!!!
Expensive Twin cam wrongness!!!
The M42 is cheap to run, cheap to maintain, duplex bullet proof timing chain, don't see your point really?
The M20 320i has the heavy fuel consumption of the 325i without the power? Each to their own, i have two E28's one is an M5 (now that is expensive to maintain) and a lightly modified 528i M30, it's thirsty but has the power to go with it.
Please explain?

I don't need to drive fast as my car doesn't make an embarrasing noise akin to a copy typist on Amphetamines!!!
Expense is Timing chain and tensioner change opposed to a cambelt on a m20.
(Jamie, I couldn't give a rats a$$ about my 2ltr, it's in a cab so sooper heavy and sooper slow, FTW, I like winding up the m42 crowd who seem to think the i.s was forged by the hands of God himself and assembled by superman. Why just the other week an i.s owner claimed to nail a scooby through the twisties!!)
My b20 is irrelevant as I said 2 extra cylinders, not a b20 would be a modification for the m42. Next you'll be telling me it's a 'baby M3'. A b25 is an improvement, an m50 is an improvement ad inifinitum.
Stop willy waving about you very impressive fleet of chrome turds and antiquated hulks of tin worm food......
(I'm just jealous really!!!!!)

And there was me expecting to find a thread on engine mods for a 318is.
An 'improvement' is adding a belt driven 70s belt-driven 2v engine that typically make an extra 30hp at the wheels (if you're lucky) for an extra 700cc, 2 cylinders and extra weight forward of the front axle? fantastic. and original.
oh and ftw = for the win, fwiw = for what its worth

wasn't the m42 forged from adamantium? and instead of CO2 I heard its so good for the enviroment the only things it gives off out the tailpipe are butterflies, rays of sunshine and fluffy baby bunny wabbits.
Seriously I did own a 318is and a 325 sport at the same time, funnily enough in the same colour. Although the sport was faster, and easier to maintain on my driveway I didn't feel as confident throwing it into corners as I did in the 318is. The 318is also did just sip on the old fuel unlike the sport which gulped no matter how much you nursed it.

Why put a bigger engine in an iS? Kinda defeats the whole point of the car, whether you like it or not...
E30Mark had a firebreathingnutterb*****d chip in his at one point, & aparrently it made a huge difference, if you can find one...

On the other point, it's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean that counts!!!
