The front half of my 2-piece system is on its last legs.
I recently scored a brand new genuine BMW one for very sensible money, but I'm hanging-on as long as possible before fitting it. I'm thinking about shelling-out for a stainless rear half to fit at the same time.
So, questions.....
Scorpion do a suitable rear section, but I can't find any other stainless manufacturer that does. Can anyone tell me if there is anyone else doing 2-piece rear sections in stainless - or link pipes to connect a 3-piece rear box to a 2-piece front end?
Powerflow is not an option as I've heard too many bad reports of them. Are Scorpions reasonable quality?
Anyone using a similar set-up (genuine front end with Scorpion rear box) on their 320i or 325i? How much louder than standard is it? (I'm a grumpy old man and I don't want my car to be over-loud, it's plenty loud enough as standard, thank you)
If Genuine + Scorpion is going to be noisy, who makes the quietest stainless rear box for the M20 engined E30?
Would I be better advised to get a genuine rear half, bearing in mind that they seem to be pretty long-lasting?
TIA
Stuart.

I'd be looking for a genuine rear box, with a nice pair of black trims from BMW.
I got lucky and took one from a scrap E30 at work recently, genuine BMW, and looks like it's only been fitted for a couple of years.

some people say scorpions are too loud but I think thats with the full system as the scorpion centre boxs tend to go and become loud, I have a scorpion back box and it sounds sweet! its not 1 of them exhausts thats annoyingly loud all the time at all rpms as the more you push it the sweeter it gets
my 2.5 came with a standard centre box and powerflow backbox.
replaced it with a full scorpion system [disappointed]. lost low end torque. anyhow out with the air saw and tape measure, kept the scorpion centre box and mated the powerflow to it, not loud and the power is as it should be.
engine rebuild in 05 with new head. puts a smile on my face everytime

I'm having issues with the scorpion system on my Touring, (3 piece system).
The end plates on the centre box have been developing stress cracks where the pipes are welded to the box, the box itself is made of incredibly thin stainless that's like tissue paper in places.
I've taken it off again today to weld up the latest batch of cracks, even 20A was burning holes with the works TIG set.
It's on its last warning, any more cracks and booming and it's heading for a date with the skip.
I had the same system (albeit several years older) on my old E30 without problem but this one's a piece of shit.
Not recommended by me

if you decide to send it to the skip, don't, send it to me instead
essbee,
Many of the stainless systems are 3 pieces. Which means your new pipe 'in stock' would be unsuitable as it's for a two-piece system.
I've got a magnex on mine and while it's good, unfortunatley as it's 3 piece I now have a center box to catch on steep driveways etc. but there was no part that low on a 2 piece system. It's louder than standard but not offensive.
Eurocarparts or similar to get a standard exhaust as, from what you say, you'd find the after market ones too loud and would need adapting to fit.

Totally the opposite in my case, went from a standard to a sebring back box, lovely upgrade in the noise, not too loud, just when you want it, upgraded the centre box from standard to a sebring centre, and it made no difference at all, was quite looking forward to the difference, and I was really dissapointed.Simon13 wrote:in my experience playing with back boxes don't really change the sound on an M20 it's the centre boxes which do it

i've heard so many cars with standard centre boxes with, mongoose, scorpions, magnex, sebring and they all sound a bit louder but no real change just a bit louder.
Fit a scorpion centre box and noise changes to the classic hollow howl. Use a scorpion back box an it enhances this more. Use a bmw back box and it stays hollow with a more bmw standard bass to it.
I've got a standard bmw system in stainless, quicksilver it made by. Now this is sweet, it sounds stock all the way but alot more meaty low down with more bass and is the same as a normal 325i system through the revs but just louder. It sounds at it's best with a log manifold. It just goes a bit too throbby with a 6 branch, well my RD one anyway
Trained ears will hear a 6 pot bm coming down the road, the only other exhaust which makes a distinct noise to standard is a scorpion wail on a 6 pot bm

I can hear 6 pots coming can tell difference between b20 & b25's as well, I was hoping for that scorpion roar you talk about from Scorpions as I fitted a Scorpion back box but its not as good as I expectedSimon13 wrote:i've heard so many cars with standard centre boxes with, mongoose, scorpions, magnex, sebring and they all sound a bit louder but no real change just a bit louder.

simon13,
im looking to replace my system. i have a 325i, i havent heard about quicksilver exhausts before, if you dont mind me asking how much did your quicksilver system cost.
i have a dealer less than 15miles from me, might have to pay them a visit. Went to a powerflow dealer near me this week but the couldnt quote me as they have been affected by the recent floods.

quiclsilver do 2 systems, one alpina replica type and a normal system in stainless both are very good, but they take a good exhaust place to fit them properly.
I bought mine secondhand but unused from Sal long before the zone shop was about! £400 it cost me

i have a scorpion rear box on a standard system (two piece i think), sounds lovley to me, slightly deeper than the orig without the hollow 1liter saxo howl you associate with chav exhausts. has been thru three MOTs so far.
powerflow suck big time
mate has one on his french turd and its been welded up three times. sounds crap and lost him tourque

I've just getting an e-mail from them too. Same price.louis2035 wrote:i contacted Quicksilver and for a full system they quoted me £864 inc. vat and delivery.
not cheap.
Looks like I'm going to be going for a Scorpion, but not right now - I've got more important things to do on the car.
I e-mailed Scorpion to ask them if they can supply the link pipes for the 2-piece system seperately, but like a lot of suppliers, they haven't had the courtesy to reply.
As post before that was not picked up on I know a company that have developed a new stainless middle section that will be for sale soon, and are willing to do group discount...back box will follow very soon
Are you interested and will get some prices!

I did see your post above. As per my last post, I'm not in the market right now, I've more important things to do to the car in the near future.cabrio wrote:As post before that was not picked up on I know a company that have developed a new stainless middle section that will be for sale soon, and are willing to do group discount...back box will follow very soon

But I could possibly be interested - with 2 conditions.......
1) I'm not interested in DTM stylee tailpipes and pipes have to be straight exit not angled.
2) It has to be either 2-piece system specific or have link-pipes like the Scorpion.
I'd rather pay the £250+ for a new Scorpion than p155 about saving a few sov's on an unknown quantity. At the moment, I'm 50/50 between a Scorpion and a genuine BMW one.
Fussy bugger me!
Just a note guys.
DO NOT DEAL WITH QUICKSILVER!
no one system will be the same and this is the very reason i had so much grief with Simon13. I bought two exhausts, one fitted quite well to my car with the tail pipes coming out the correct amount. The unused system I sold to Simon was miles out and I think he went through quite a lot of hassle to get it sorted.
Not only this but they are extremely slow and the guy on the phone is the biggest BS'itting arse I've ever come accross.
Hap had major issues with them also and so did Simon (another Simon who has that grey C2 2.7 with the sport kit).
Manufacturers such as Scorpion have already bent over a little to make us new tail pipes, if we need to get modifications made to the current systems to give them a different "personality" then I'm sure they will accomodate.
Of the many after market systems I have fitted the scorpion and OEM are the only two that consistently fit well. The Sebring has extremely good quality and noise but the rear brackets are crap and the tail pipes are totally out of date. They don't look so bad on a car with sport rear valance but they look shocking on one without.

I had a superspint system on my M3 and that was great in quality and sound, just right, supersprint are better systems than scorpion but a tad bit more expensive.

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but I scored this.....

Ooooh errr missus!.... I didn't realise 3" tailpipes are so BIIIG.

A friendly 'Zoner has promised me a pair of link-pipes.

It won't be going on just yet, I want to get my money's worth out of the box that's on there!
