What i'd call the rubbing strips - the 2" high rubber or plastic inserts that go round the standard front and rear bumpers (probably only on the face lift cars?) are all scuffed on my Tourer.

I knew GSF sold them, but on phoning today i found out that they'd recently sold off their remaining stock for silly money (circa Ԛ£8 each!) and now they're not getting any more in. Bummer! BMW want an arm, two legs and the contents of my b0ll0x for a complete set (<Ԛ£100!), which i refuse to pay on principle. (Though the receptionist could perhaps have...... no, sorry, i'm a happily married man!)

So, it got me thinking. I had an rubber bumber MGB GT many years ago and someone tipped me off that a lot of rubbing with fine wet & dry followed by a good polish would eventually bring them back to as new condition. It worked fine on the B too, but has anyone tried this on the E30 strips? I dont want to risk trying it only to find out i make matters worse.

Perhaps there are other alternatives to mask the usual white scuff marks that our friendly members could share?
