Well, I designed some direct to head throttle bodies for the 325i engine last week and have sourced some material to make them this weekend :)

They're 40mm dia which gives roughly the same port area as the standard ports but the problem I have is finding some suitable butterflies.

I really can't be arsed to make them and the spindles so can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier?

I've just e-mailed Burlen so they might be able to help, but your thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated :)

Cheers!

Hey mate sound like a great project. Can you get some pics or drawings up as I'd be really interestd in doing this myself at some point.
As for throttle butterfiles, this may be a little left field or out of the box, but it may be easier (I don't know your set up either) from the fabrication point of view to make gillotine style ones like the M1 had. Less turbulance at full throttle and it'd be a pritty unique set up.
Anyways let us know how you get on.
Cheers

No idea where you would get the parts but good luck with the project! Would love to see it running! The sound would be amazing as well.

i don't think a flat slide throttle is practical. possible, and has been done on road cars, but not easy. throttle position sensor design? sealing issues?

some bikes and f1 engines used to use em but they're not common.

use butterflies and spindles from some old carbs maybe?

Hey like that! :)

TBs and Nitrous :D

Only problem there looks to be clearance between the 6th TB and the servo.

I reckon I've dodged that particular bullet by having the TBs protrude only 75mm from the head before doing a 45degree bend forwards to avoid the braking system. That way I can get an air box in there to be fed with lovely pressurised air from the turbos :)

Should also be able to piddle about with the tuned lengths so I'll measure up the original inlet manifold for the runner length as best I can and go from there.

Might have to go this way when I go to a 2.7

That ITB setup on the M20 would be mine. Ive been following my progress in this thread from said E30tech.com

So far its been about $500. Its definately a far cry from the 2300 without any form of engine management that BMP design gets for thier ITB setup

I was thinking about trying to make some ITBs made for a Nissan Skyline fit. I saw some cheap ones a little while ago (here in Australia). The Skyline has a straight 6 too so I thought with a bit of modification they might work. But I don't think it would work out much or any cheaper then $500 (I assume that's GBP?) so I'll be interested to see how you go with this.

A lot of the price of the BMP ones could be from the time spent in research to get the best design? If you do it yourself you just have spend a bit of time trying different things. Also I have a book here that goes into a bit of detail about what works best for torque or power and other things so something like that would probably give a good headstart. It covers performance tuning in general and has a section on intakes and ITBs.

Well, the running total's up to Ԛ£48.94 for metal so far.

It's then just a case of marking it all up and doing the machining.

The problem is that the ports are a WEIRD shape! I'd guess that the ports on the skyline would be a bit bigger than the M20 as it has the 4valves per cylinder.

The one's I've designed are bloody rudimentary though, very much designed for home manufacture. I designed a set for a Pug Mi16 engine last year which are being CNC'd out of billet when the guy gets around to it. They've got pretty much everything on them like fuel rail mounts, TPS mount etc. whereas the BMW one's are gonna be a case of making brakets up for things as the need arises.

All adds to the fun
