I think its simply cause theyre a bit older than the facelifted plastic bumper e30s!

later ones (plastic bumper) were galvanised, so less likely to have terminal rot than the chromies

engine management system in post facelifts is a bit more effective IMO,

plus i happen to think they look better

I think Monsport42 posted in another thread that they are galvanised...which is not accurate as far as I know - they did however use some zinc coating or something on key components and sorted out some of the rust traps with some extra physical protection on the arches etc on the later cars.

This is true

If you found a mint 318i chrome bumper and a mint plastic bumper 318i I don't think the chrome bumper one would be worth less, may even be worth more, Looks and feels far more like a classic.

I know this is not true of sports, but It maybe one day when many of the MK1s have rusted to bits

Yeah, it's just cos they're older & therefore usually more rusty!

That, or the general public just has no taste whatsoever...

Sorry if I have mislead anyone with incorrect info. Got the galvanised bit from the MoT man who failed my old 323i and never thought to question it. Mark IIs do have some extra protective coating on the most exposed panels though however it got there. My old Mark I rotted from the inside out. A bodywork guy started cutting away at the inner sills but he called it a day when he got to the transmission tunnel! The jacking points were like wet carboard and the inner wings could have strained peas! But this is what it looked like on the outside!!
