Spent hours today changing all the exhaust manifold studs and nuts and gaskets today. Did the main gasket as well as the downpipe one.
I was expecting a nightmare job with studs broken off in the head etc but I was happy that none were snapped but they were all really easy to take out. None of them appeared tight.
The worst part was getting the damn nuts off the downpipe and back on as they were tight as hell. I was using all my effort to move the spanner and socket about an inch at a time then going another inch and so on until finished. I'll have arms like Mr T tomorrow!

Its great now to drive as I can really hear the lovely note of the exhaust now instead of the crappy ticking noise when touching the throttle I had before.
:D

Heres some pics:
Everything off -

Noticed this little stamp on the side of the head, it said 2.5, 2.7 ?

Shot from other side. Engine needs cleaned big time to get anywhere near the standard of the GSI.

There was some white stuff inside so I cleaned all that out with a little wire brush, dont know what it was.

Top man!

It's great just hearing the exhaust note not the bloody ticking!

Excellent stuff.

I cant wait till I get the leaky fuel tank sorted and then I can go for a proper drive.
Next on the list - wire up the new CD head unit when it arrives this week.
Z3 shifter.
Need to do something with the steering as well as its very vague at speed.
Then its just a matter of going round the car like I did with the GSI making everything like new.

I only planned on keeping this car about 6 months but at this rate It looks like I'll be keeping it a little longer.

nitromorse is good for cleaning up the inlet manifold, just keep it away from any plastics.
