It's a bit of an odd story but I've ended up fitting a pattern front&middle section on to a genuine back section. It doesn't feel or sound quite like the genuine full system (I think I'm being really picky). Fortunately, the garage has given me an option of trying a different pattern front&middle section or paying the extra for a genuine part. Not sure how much extra though - any ideas? The car's a 318i coming up to 180k but I don't mind paying a bit extra IF the genuine part will be worth it.

What do people reckon?

PS - I'm not into aftermarket loud stuff hence that's not really an option.

depends IMHO how long you plan to keep the car. Genuine will last another 18? years, pattern will not.

Power will be down slightly, but on a 1.8 do you care? :D

Why would power be down? You're right, that's what it feels like but why?

Possible flow restriction through the baffles of the non gen system, could cause back pressure issues !
Flow restriction will cause loss of power.....

So genuine parts everytime to hell with cost??

Being a family owned car the original system lasted 18 years (good guess earlier Orangecurry) so I guess I've had good value from the exhaust so far! And I wouldn't be surprised if I keep the old girl for a while too.

Yes,IMHO the original is best,my car is still on it's original system.....................took it off and checked it and it's still in very good condition after 18 years, all it needed was cleaning(even the welds came up like new!)and painted it in VHT..............really impressed with the quality of the original BMW Boyson systems!
