From old discussions on other car forums, I understand that the Getrag boxes in BMWs are pretty good strong boxes, and are sometimes swapped out into other makes to cope with tunes engines. 8)

Does anyone have any information about the strength of the various Getrag 'boxes available? I assume the 'box in my 320 isn't up to 700 ftlbs... ;)

What do you swap into your E30s to cope with high power?

GETRAG boxes are bullit proof build. and last F-----G long IF you change the gearbox oil every year - simple -

My getrag box in my E21 is 28 years old and engages into gear sweet as the gears are tight due to fact that the oil gets changed every year wether i drive the car or not is a code of practice i carry out.... and probably out last me by a long way.......If you have problems engaging into gears when its cold its because the gearbox works 100% when its hot, basically as the gearbox and engine are bolted together heat from the engine travels to the gearbox which helps the gearbox when starting first time of the day otherwise 9 out of 10 the gearbox oil needs to be changed, another thing id do is add car engine oil additive which is of honey type fluid and mix it with gearbox oil to protect the gears from wear... it works...

That's a useful bit of information. :thumb: I put up a thread recently asking a similar question and no-one seemed to have a definitave answer.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

I Know that the dogleg box that fits to the M20 engine (from a e21 323?) was renowned for breaking in any Kumho cars that tried it. Instead, the preferred option was to fit the M3 dogleg box via an adapter plate.

Currently, a standard M20 320.

I'm just having silly thoughts about something far far better, with a giant laggy snail and 500hp 8)

Talking about dogleg boxes, i have one for sale which is from the E21 323i but as you well know it goes straight into the E30 but the 4th gear needs to be changed as it dosent engage, i was quoted £90 to repair it, but as i got a 5 seires Mpower diff fitted/modyfied on my car, it gives me what i want so im happy with the standard 5 speed, so if someones interested its up for sale....
