I can't imagine mine changing suspension bits. Shopping, talking crap and painting her nails is more like it.M3RAGS wrote:just use birds.
As for the outfit in Uxbridge, yeah, use them if you can afford it.........
Well as this site isnt constrained by the legal nonsense that afflicts the BMW CC GB site.
Basically I bought my M3 knowing the handbrake wasnt pulling evenly. After faffing around trying to rotate the adjusters with no luck I bit the bullett and took off the OSR caliper and disc. The shoes were 100% worn out.
I was pretty busy at the time, so rather than do it myself, and on hearing favourable things about them, booked it into Bexleys.
Got the car back the same day, and I found a ratchet and extension in the car. Decided to do the decent thing and take it back inside. Wish I hadnt bothered now.
On the way out of their car park I noticed the mileage had gone up by 10 miles! Why? Well I have my suspicions. The local BMW dealer is a round trip of 10 miles away. Coincidence?
Found that the handbrake still pulled un-evenly, though at least now it was having an effect and held the car on a hill.
But the best bit was when I looked at the handbrake lever. Trim wasnt refitted properly. I lifted it up and imagine my surprise!

Look what they did to the cable!!!!
What you also cant see in that pic was that they had gripped the adjusting nut threads with mole grips.
Phoned them. Answers were
* We HAD to grip the threads with mole grips (No you Fooking DIDNT have you never head of a technique called "Double Nutting")
and
* We didnt grip the cable where its damaged.
and
* The shoes need time to bed in they'll be fine, but if they arent pop back and we'll re-adjust them
(Funny how in the past Ive never heard of that happening!)
Cannot recommend them in the SLIGHTEST! Hate them with a passion!

Used Bexley for the last 12 years. I've found them very friendly, helpful not expensive (but not cheap) and knowledgeable. I know quite a few members have had problems but I can only speak as I find.

You coming next Sunday?
Monsport. I cant knock you for saying how you've found them. ALL garages have good and bad days. But when your a new customer, to me at least, you get 1 chance. Bugger it up and you'll never see me, my car or more importantly my money again!

maybe we are only hearing the bad stuff?
good to see some postive stuff coming on this thread, its too easy for anyone to have a bad day but thats cable is blatant damage and I for one would have expected better.

You might like to look at the Journal entry I made yesterday (before this thread was started) about my auto gearbox and Bexley.
Rich, if that had happened to me on my first or any other visit, I probably wouldn't be back there either!

I was in a bit of a rush when I replied before so I'll explain in some detail my experiences of Bexleys. For reference, this is my own personal experience and moy own personal opinions.
My first experience of Bexleys was at a rolling road day. They seemed to know what they were doing and their 2.7's seemed to produce good power. This is when I decided that I'd take my M20 2.8 conversion to them for a proper remap.
On the rolling road day I was talking to them and they said it would push 220bhp easilly with a remap and MAF conversion so that's what I did.
I took a day off work to take the car up to them and so did my girlfriend so that she could bring me back. It's over 100 miles away so I had 2 lots of petrol to pay for. I arranged to leave the car with them for a week and pick it up again a week later.
Having spoken to several people and told them that I was having some work done by them, a couple of people told me not to expect my car back on time. I didn't really think much of it and called them the day before it was supposed to be collected and was told that it wasn't quite ready because they'd had a memeber of staff off ill. This means that I lost a days holiday as did my girlfriend and had to take another day off the following week to collect it.
I was also told by someone who had actually been to the garage that week that my car hadn't even been touched.
Anyway, I returned to pick my car up the following week and I arrived much earlier than they expected, infact 10 mins before they even opened. Nigel then rolled in some 20 odd minutes later and opened up to find my car still on the rollers in bits. I was told that they were just "finishing up" so I went to get brekkie with my girlfriend at the greasy cafe round the corner and came back an hour later to find it "finished".
I asked what the power was and he said "oh it's around 200bhp"... around??? around 200bhp?? What is it exactly... 201!! He explained that it wasn't about peak power but the corves and yes he's right, the curves were very good especially the torque but I was told at the RR day that it should push 220bhp no problem.
Now I paid my bill (a couple of pounds short of a grand) and headed home. The car ran like a total DOG when it's cold which is down to the MAF conversion I later learnt because there's no IAT sensor on the MAF. Although throttle resonse is very good witht eh MAF, if I'd known it was this bad prior to having the conversion, I would never have had it done.
When I took my car, there was still sorty paper over the carpets and a dirty seat cover on the seats, I'd expect them to be removed.
When I got home I had a proper look at what they'd done and wasn't very happy. There was no bracket holding the MAF or filter, it was simply hanging on the robber elbow. The MAF wires weren't covered up properly and the car didn't perform as well as I'd been told it should. Of course it felt fast and powerful, there's no denying that, ask anyone that's been in it, it moves like a rocket but it doesn't go like "they said it would" and this was before they knew the work would be coming their way.
It's now some 6 months on and I've just had the car MOT'd and guess what.... it's failed on the emissions. That means that I cant drive it because it wasn't mapped properly and it's another 100mile + trip for me to get them to fix it!!! Another couple of days off work for me and the missus and andothe fortune in fuel to get there and back for them to fix a problem that shouldnt' have been there in the first place.
I can't decide weather to take it back to them to fix the job I paid them to do or to cut my losses and take it to somewhere that will do a proper job.

Sorry I don't agree, I don't rate them what-so-ever.amorgan wrote:If its to do with performance modifications go with Bexley, otherwise use Geoff at ETA. I used to take my M3 to him and the new owner still uses him. Very good value indeed
It's funny how it's only their own engines which seem to perform well, all others don't do so good hmmmm

Its unfortunate you do not live near them isn't it.
But to be honest Adam, they messed up and you should give them the opportunity to rectify the problem without having to pay someone else.
After all, they did they job(!) and know what they did.
I wonder if the guys at bexleys read these threads and take on board.
I feel companies nowadays are more worried about turnover and profit rather than the satisfaction of their customers.
Remember, I feel the better companies are the smaller outfits that gain a reputation through word of mouth, other than magazine advertising. Laso, you find a lot of folk just saying 'yeah bexleys are great etc' without ever having used them.
I remember chatting to them on the phone and got a mixed response but to be honest, although I am put off by what people say you can never truly commenmt until you have received the bad / or good service.
But my loyalties lie with the lads at Birds.

I know I should take it to them to rectify the problem but it's going to cost me a few hundred quid just to get the car back to them!

Hi folks. New to the forum but have been reading posts for some time now. Just thought i'd chip in with my bit
I get all the work done on my cars by a guy in Surrey who dosn't advertise but really knows his stuff. He's a BMW specialist called MJF Engineering 01306 713232 and looks after quite a few good cars. Currently doing my 2.7 conversion, not cheap but i've never know anyone to complain about the work.
