1987 325i sport ??
Moderator: martauto
Hi to everyone, i'm new to this forum.
I'm going to see an E30 325i sport next week, but i'd be interested to see some pics of the 1987 model if anyone has any?
Did all of the sports come with a factory fitted body kit, or did some have the big chrome bumpers?
I'm new to E30's, i have an E36 but am hoping to get an E30 very soon.
Any help/advice and pictures would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi, All sports came with the tech kit, but there are 2 types.
Sports made before and including 1987 have one kind of kit (tech 1 kit), and sports made after 1987-1991 have another kit (tech 2 kit).
The early e30's have the crome bumpers, and the later post 1987 ones have plastic bumpers.
There is a sport buying guide on the zone, do a search for that, its very helpful.
Oh and welcome to the zone.
Paul

Thank you sir,
I thought that was the case with the two styles of Mtech kit, but wasn't 100% certain if all sports came with the kit as standard. So thanks for clearing that up for me.
I will search for the guide that you kindly mentioned.
Hopefully i'll be the proud owner of a 325i sport very soon, and i'll get some pictures up.
Thanks!

No worries. I want a sport also some time this year.
You can put the tech 2 kit on a tech 1 car, but its not a perfect fit, and sort of defeats buying the tech 1 sport, not a tech 2! Watch our for rust on the tech 1's. Very few clean examples left.

Well, i've not seen any photos, but the guy says the body work is pretty much mint.
It's been in storage for the last two years, so hopefully it's in ok condition.
If it's in ok condition i think i'll get it and spend time making it perfect, kind of a project and an investment.
I'll keep hold of my E36 318, but once i've driven the 325 sport i might change my mind very quickly!!
Thanks for the links and advice.

LSD should be there yes. Jack up rear of car and turn one wheel, the other should turn the same way. Or you could just spin the rear wheels if seller will let you, should leave TWO black lines.
300-400 miles to a tank (about 45-50 quid iirc)
Electric stuff varies depending on cars spec.
Sport seats will be there as standard, leather is an extra option from new though.

sport seats cloth
abs
elec sunroof
elec windows and mirrors
maps lights
headlight wash
and it has a lsd.. if he will let you jack the car up so both wheels are of the ground, when you spin one wheel they should both spin in the same direction, if you spin one wheel and the other goes the other way its an open diff , but have a good look for rust there are not many clean ones left,

Hey Paul, your car looks amazing! Well done.
Just a quick question about the the LSD, which is it?
Paul says "LSD should be there yes. Jack up rear of car and turn one wheel, the other should turn the other way",
And e30sport32 says "and it has a lsd.. if he will let you jack the car up so both wheels are of the ground, when you spin one wheel they should both spin in the same direction, if you spin one wheel and the other goes the other way its an open diff"
I'm not looking to cause an argument, just to eductae myself!
Thanks again guys, you're a massive help to an excited E30 fan.

Thanks, its a rust free example which is good, but a bit slow.
Sorry i wasnt thinking, i have edited my post. Both wheels should turn the SAME way. Also if the writting stamped on the LSD is still there and not corroded there should be an 's' on it.
Where abouts are you? Maybe a zoner can go along and look over the car with you.

I would recommend that you get the last seven digits of the VIN from any "sport" you are thinking of buying, take them to a BMW dealer and get a print out of the car's original spec, to make sure it's what it claims to be.
Plenty of fake Sports around.

Wow, nice looking car! Thanks for the pics. You got any more? Maybe engine and interior?
I hope the one i go to see looks that nice, i'll snap it up if everything seems in order.
Is your car dolphin grey? Or darker. It's hard to tell from the photos.
Brianmoooore, that's good advice about the VIN number.
Are BMW dealers usually alright about that sort of thing?
bmwe30mtech, i'm in Manchester, but the car's just south of Birmingham somewhere.
I'll probably take my dad with me, he's no BMW expert, but he's very good with cars in general.
Any more tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fantastic, thanks a lot for the extra pictures.
Is there a big difference in performance between the Mtech 1 and Mtech 2 325 sports?
Another query, do the E30's have check conrol like the later 3 series?
Thanks

not on mine there aint. some have an on board computer on the dash.
as for the performance between the two:
i think there is pretty much no difference in performance between the mtech models. the stated power output is the same. not sure if there is any suspension differences. the only real difference is the body.
i personall prefer the styling on the tech1s- much more retro and suited to the e30 shape.

BMW UK insist their dealers are alright about that sort of thing!bodders wrote: Brianmoooore, that's good advice about the VIN number.

my car has manual steering, manual windows and sunroof. the only thing electric powered are the wingmirrors. so you wont be suprised to hear it dont have aircon either. its got abs tho
im sure most of these things are optional when the car was purchased new. so youll find power steering and electric stuff on some cars

A lot of these things became standard on later models, but BMWs had, and still have. extensive options lists which make it possible to double the price of the basic model.oakey wrote:my car has manual steering, manual windows and sunroof. the only thing electric powered are the wingmirrors. so you wont be suprised to hear it dont have aircon either. its got abs tho

Any On Board Computer that an E30 has will be to the left of the radio, in place of the analogue clock. The device that you find in the roof of some six cylinder cars is a warning lamp module for various bulbs and fluid levels. On models for some markets it also contains a seat belt warning lamp and/or a engine overheating lamp.
Any idea what sort of price is should be looking at for a 1987 325i sport?
Obviously this depends entirely on condition, mileage and spec, but just wondered what you guys think?
Oakey, you find it alright not having power steering?
I don't think it would bother me too much if it doesn't have it, but it would be nice thogh!
