I had tinted lights on mine for quite a while, As long as you don't go too mad with the paint they should still flash orange-ish!
I changed mine for a set of startec all red clusters after a while as the paint was fading on my original lenses.

I've been running with red tinted rears for a couple of years now, they do flash orangey/red.

I did play around with doing a striped effect like the merc lenses have, looked ok but I didn't get round to finishing them.
I'd do it mate, just do light coats and check them every so often to see how dark they are getting.

No like the mercedes (I think?) have striped lights, as in thin bands of red then orange then red ect to look red from a distance and still flash orange.
I may still have the cluster I was using as a tester at home.
