have a looksie at my ride on steelies on the rear--handling is great fun but stability above 120mph is not so good cos of the sidewalls.. 8O

was driving back from stevenage today and it started raining.. was interesting to say the least...

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it's illegal to use narrower tyres on the back of a car :(

Doubtless average plod wouldn't have a clue, but might be worth bearing in mind.

Now if you fitted the steelies all round, there'd be no problem. Go figure!

I don't think it's illegal to have narrower rears, just as long as tyres on each axle are the same size.

I've allways prefered narrower rears

I'm pretty sure it is illegal.

The rear tyres must be superior or equal to the fronts which means being the same width or wider.

Similarly, if for some godforsaken reason, you had a pair of cross-ply tyres on the car, they'd have to go on the front with the superior radials on the rear.

It can't be illegal to have narrower tyres on the rear than on the front.

Or to mix sizes on the same axle.

If it was, why would the car handbook tell you to fit the 'spacesaver' spare wheel to the rear wherever possible in cases of emergency? (Obviously better than steering with it)

The law doesn't turn a blind eye to non enforced emergency situations.

The only legal restrictions that I know of relate to mixing radial and crossply tyres.

  Like the prat I had on saturday driving a VW Sharan,I undertook him on a roundabout(he was in the wrong lane) and then decided he was coming off the same exit as me,he comes up all close and then screams past, bear in mind i'm taking it easy(missus and kids in car) I don't go above 2.5k,and this cock seems to be under the impression i'm racing him,but can't beat him,him and his missus were laughing aswell,I just laid back, cooled out and thought "mate,I could fookin waste you,you sad tosser driving a car called Sharan"!

I expect it did, however I had the last laugh, naturally I caught up with him due to traffic ect.we got to a roundabout,he was halfway across about to exit when a 40 ton Somerfield artic just pulled straight out in front of him as if he wasn't there making him come to a complete abrupt stop on the roundabout, the artic was going the same way as him, along a road where I know there is nowhere to overtake for miles, then I laughed at him as I turned off in a different direction, they wern't laughing that time!
