Does anyone know when the M-Tech 2 steering wheel came out? I have a 90 Sport with an M-Tech 2 wheel and want to know whether it's likely to be original. I do want to replace it with an M-Tech 1 wheel anyway cos I prefer the look but was just wondering...

I do believe it was the 1990 mark they changed to the M-tech II.
Makes a change someone wanting to go from a tech II to a tech I!

I think it all changed at the same time the MK2 sport cam out (around 87 I think). In general, if you have a MK1 sport, you have an Mtech 1 wheel, if you have a MK2 sport, you got the tech 2.
I would keep the Tech 2. Everyone konws they are better than the early ones
Ian.

Ian, I've seen a lot of M-tech II cars with M-tech I wheels, most seem to be F reg cars, I always thought they changed around the same time too!
And yes, tech II wheel all the way, feels like your driving a bus with the tech I!

Hmmm interesting... I was gonna buy that Tech1 wheel off you Simon but if the general consensus is that the Tech2 wheel is better I think I'll keep mine!!
I thought they were the same size but if the Tech1 is a bus job I'll def keep me Tech2 - sorry to mess you about Simon!!

My Sport is an 89 and came with MTechI wheel and I changed to the MTech II. I realised after getting it home it had come off an E34 5 series and was the same diameter as the one I had (i.e. 390mm). I have been looking for a mint Sport one (370mm) for a while now.

but is the smaller tech 2 that much better? I've always found the bigger ones ok IMO. Had a momo course wheel way to small!

I prefer M-tech II wheel too, its got nice thumb grips and looks like a modern unit.
Altho if i wanted M-tech I wheel id buy one and flog the M-tech II on ebay, they seem to be making loads!

I suppose it's all down to taste. I wasn't too dissappointed with the larger one as it's chunkier than the MTech I and has the comfortable thumbrests. It was only when I borrowed Jags's (Bexleys) red shed for a couple of days that I really noticed the difference. Steering more responsive/quicker (we have the same set up) and it just seemed to match the car better. And of course it is more authentic. (Funnily enough, I've been driving their spare E34 520 for a couple of weeks and that had a 3 series sports wheel!)
