Went to remove the wishbones on the touring today to replace them with the ones from the Sport. Didnt get very far (luckily) because when I got under it to start undoing stuff I looked up and found one knackered engine mount :( ....

The git of it is, I had spent yesterday removing the complete front legs and wishbones from the Sport to fit to the touring which turned out to be a waste of time

Engine mount is a fairly minor thing to replace.

Yeah I know. Its just the last thing I wanted to see today - one more thing to sort out.

One thing Im wondering, is there any particular reason it would of broke? The car does get a workout from time to time, but it doesnt get driven that hard.

Well the car is still in one piece, I was driving it this morning :?
The mount was fine when it was fitted to my Sport and looked ok when I fitted the engine to the touring.

My driveway looks a bit sad at the moment - 2 E30s both up on blocks :(

It has not long broke by the looks of it.....When i had a "slight" bang in my old E30, only the rubbers broke on the mounts....

Yeah, it can only just of happened, the break is very clean and not covered in crap/oil.

I swear I havent hit the car at all. (Except for thumping the bonnet in frustration earlier today  )

Looks to me like this may have been dropped at somepoint, when being jacked up to swap mounts etc.

Not a major job thought, not something that i would expect to just break.

Hope you get it sorted and put that BMW smile back on your face!

Does looks fresh as there is no build up of grime on the cracks.

Nothing worse than unexpected problems.

Could have been caused by metal fatigue, might have been a weak point in the casting from when it was made, with production tolerences being only moderately tight (compared to say specialist cars, M3s and race cars etc) the mount might have slipped though quality control.

The crack might have been there a lot longer than now, just not in a state where you could have seen it till it had the force appled to it in just the right manner to crack it.
BMW and Opel, both RWD, both german, both good fun

my touring came with a broken mount when i bought it but was otherwise a clean low mileage car with no traces of crash damage, easy to replace.the only other time ive had a broken mount is when i wrote of my previous car in a head on crash with a truck.

If the rubber mounts are sagging i surpose it could pull the mounts apart, as in away from each other :?
There is NO nucleus.

Hmm, could be something to look at. Although the rubber mounts seemed good when I fitted the engine.

OK, result :D

Went to Fritz Bitz today to get another engine mount and came away with the mount and a complete front subframe, including wishbones, ARB and practically new bushes throughout for 30 notes.

Saves me swapping the bits from the Sport (and struggling to get the wishbones off the touring) or buying new bushes etc.

Got the day off work on Weds, so the touring should be back on the road by Weds evening :woohoo:
