Does anyone know....
Bmw quoted the height of a 318is in their original brochures / handbooks as being 20mm lower than the other models in the range. Is this purely down to the car running different springs (compared to the 318i for example).
Only asking as I have just been looking at a few websites quoting replacement standard springs as being suitable for 316i, 318i and 318is, which does'nt make sense if the car was different as stock?

the 318iS came with Mtech suspension which was approx 15-20mm lower than the standard 318i.
As far as i know the springs & shocks are all different to that of a standard 318i.

the is uses 51mm struts like the the 325i's
the springs were of the M-tech origin which is 20mm lower and harder, personally I think the Mtech stuff is pretty good for 1990 but I still changed em for H&R's which is what everyone should do

Thanks for the info guys. I bought a set of standard shocks from bmw which are made by boge/sachs. For the springs, I decided to check the boge/sachs website directly - the part numbers for the shocks match up exactly to the ones supplied by bmw but for the springs, they list one part number for the 316 to 318is (6 cylinder models get a different part number).
I realise now that it would have been easier to get lowered springs but I need to keep the standard ride height as the car navigates a garage ramp and speed bumps every day on the way to work (the front lip would be d.o.a. if the car was any lower).
