There has been a few threads about Keys in the past, so I just thought i would post my findings.

Keys are still availalbe from BMW, (dealers have to send off for them and order them straight from your VIN number

Normal plastic ket is Ԛ£5.42 +VAT and Key with Light is Ԛ£17.50 + VAT + key insert (metal bit)

I think this is pretty reasonable.

Was told that the key may need filing down a bit due to age of car and may not fit if the locks have ever been changed.

To get a key you have to take your V5, driving liceanse/passport and a utilitie bill. They have to fill a form and sign there life away!

Seam to take it pretty seriously, probably due to the fact that getting a key is practicly the only way to steel a new car.

No probs. It's just that no amount of jiggery pokery with some wires would get my car started

a local locksmith once told me he could match odd lockes if he had enough bits... may be worth asking if it saves a few quid and a load of hassle?

when i ordered a new matching key and barrel for my wifes E34 they just asked to the number plate and ordered it up 8O

not posting what dealer though in case someone loses a E30 from this snippet of info! dodgy 8O

I tried to get a torch key about 6 or 7 weeks ago from the dealers and they told me they are no longer available :?
Had to settle for a standard key, took my docs in and got a phone call a few days later saying the machine they used to cut the keys with no longer exists (different dealership)
So had to settle for a blank key!

Since then I got a blank torch key off E-Bay and got them both cut at my locksmiths.

I was pretty pissed off TBH, they kept me waiting over a week, told me I had to come over with my docs, and then after that I still didnt get a working key

How does that work then if you buy a new barrel for your car and get given a new set of keys?! you see my cars de-locked.

Thats Knights of Stafford Gwyn, but the dealer who had the machine was in Birmingham somewhere.

Yeah it was a US key, was Ԛ£12 inc post, so was nearly a tenner cheaper!

Did you actually buy a torch key? Or was it just a price you got, if somethings available they normally get it for me, never had any problems before

Very dodgy, dealer I visited (Hexagon of Highgate) had to fill out a form, if the car was stolen the police could according charge the dealership. Stealing keys is the easiest way to steal a car now.

He thought that the key may even have been cut in Germany...(didn't do it at the dealership)

Dan, no I just got the bog standard plastic one because I wanted to check, glad I did!

Ordering some from the US as we speak!
