You sure you're not confused by the short gear ratio with the shortshifter fella (Dominitry)?

Sorry, just thinking that you'll definately be able to tell the difference with a shortshifter & without because the changes are quite significant! Nothing like before.

How hard is it to fit a short shifter/z3 shifter? How long do you think it would take for a moderate novice to do so?

Dominitry, i have a Sport Mtec II & it's basically the same set up. Obviously there are differences but nothing that concern your gearbox fella.

Anyway, the gear ratios on these sports are shorter than normal 325's which, helps you increase your speed quicker due to the ratios. If you had a shortshift on the car then it'd take a few days for you to get used to it. You'd find it difficult for a couple of days. Also, you would know if you had a shortshift fella as you may not have experienced anything like it!

I'm sure someone from this zone will be able to help you with expert advice. However, the shortshift is a must-Z3 2.8. It sure makes a difference!

Regards, BJ.

I know about the gear ratios mate, but the throw when changing gear is very short compared to a dunx's e30, im not sure if dunx's may be worn but Chaos said he always thought my sport had a quick gear change, and hes got a low milage e30 so obviously not worn, i have no idea how to tell because i've never driven another sport, but the difference to dunx's SE is not mild, its huge.

a good standard lever with all the bushes ok is not that bad imo, but the 1.9 lever is a joy to use again imo. 2.8 is a bit too harsh

Oh and anyone going to fit one, its well worth fitting a new shifter bearing (number 4 below), mine was *really* knackered. Can't remember if it says that in the tech article but I thought I would point it out anyway because it will make a big difference.

The question's always being raised about the difference between the 1.9 and the 2.8 shift lever, and it's difficult to answer objectively, so, with a rush of blood the the head, let's have a go at quantifying it

On mine I have the 2.8 shift lever, and measuring with the gear knob removed ( as that gives us a nice fixed point), and from the top and centre of the shift lever, the travel from first to second is 6cm. With the gear knob in place (Z4 style) it's 7cm

If someone who has a 1.9 shift lever could measure from the same points people could make a judgement which one is for them (and maybe compare the standard shift too). Maybe we could add the results to the technical article too?

Am I missing the point here? Surely it'd be a bad thing to discover that you already had a short shift, & therefore didn't have the oportunity to improve it so easily? I'm assuming that's the reason you were considering one anyway?!
