Mine is converted to a 325i
Engine brakes suspension everything
Some insurance company's say "oooohhh arrrgg, we can't possibly insure that...."
"why, its as per a standard 325i??????"
The stupidest thing was when the original idots cancelled the insurance...why?...because I had "modified" the ecu. I was actually running a standard 2.5 ECU. As I tried to explain to the girl on the other end....A four cylinder ecu wouldn't run a 6 cylinder engine very well!!!! But oh no! I "had" to get an engineer's report AGAIN!
ANYWAY:
The company I'm with now (bad boy insurance) insure it as a 320i and loaded the policy by 10% for the conversion.

some companies will actually charge you less as they reckon if you put the effort in you'll look after it..

I suspect that the insurance will go up a bit. Also, there's a fair chance that you'll end up paying more than you would on a standard 325. However, some insurers consider that your investment of time and money in the conversion means you'll be more careful and quote lower accordingly.
Why not get some quotes before you begin the conversion?

My M50 powered 325i costs less to insure than an E30 325i Cab, and its probably about the same as 325i Sport. When they were quoting me up they were asking me subtle questions like my experience with RWD and what owners clubs i was part of.

I thought you should re-register the car with the new engine capacity with the dvla, then it's classed as that car rather than insuring it as a conversion?

You legally have to register the changes with the DVLA. They will record that the engine's been changed (engine No. and capacity). You still have to tell the insurance company of the change though!
