With the small finger problems Ive been having lately  Ive had time to do some more thinking - which is usually dangerous and expensive

The upshot is, Im fed up with seeing a pink E30 everytime I look out the window so I have been thining about my options.

The car will be resprayed thanks to some muppet and his keys and another muppet who left an exhaust manifold in the boot and went round a corner a bit too quick
There is also the question of what lurks under the Mtech kit :?

The question is - do I stay with Brilliant Red (and polish it every other day to keep it Red) or go for a change of colour?

Im thinking of changing to Calypso Red as I really like the colour on the Cabs, but Im not sure if it suits the 2dr shape.....

Im also tempted by a nice metallic blue like the one below - I think the one Im after is a motorsport cab colour, but its similar.

What do you guys think??

Cheers

I know chuff-all about paint, but if you keep it Brilliant Red but have plenty of lacquer on, will that stop it fading/going pink?
If so, go for it!
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Love calypso red, but I voted for brill red, keep it original, it's my fave colour, and I know it would annoy me to know under there somewhere it would still be the old colour!

I think I know colour you mean, but Id prefer to keep it an original E30 colour.

I know nothing either :?
Thing is, Ive asked a few local paintshops/bodyshops etc around my way and some say there is nothing that can stop it fading and others say there are UV resistant lacquers that will prevent it from fading for a few years, but its not cheap. TBH, I cant see the point in spending a lot on something thast going to fade again in the near(ish) future.

It might not be the old colour under it. If Im going to change the colour it would be a proper strip down job, right back to the bare shell. It would be a lot of work, but if Im going to do it.....

I don't think red fading is as bad as it's made out to be! If you don't look after it, it will eventually go, but if looked after it looks stunning, as you saw, my old sport still had a nice shine to it, and that was after 15 years.

Keep it Red,trouble is though it will fade and not matter what you do it won't bring it back so a respray would be the only answer, but if changing go for the blue.

I know what you mean Simon, how often was yours polished? And it was garaged wasnt it?

My Sport was garaged by the previous owner (for 7-8 years), only used mainly at the weekends and was polished pretty regularly, but it had still faded. It looked pretty bad compared to yours at Rockingham.

The Brilliant Red has grown on me (didnt want a red car) and it does look good when fresh, but its the idea of spending on a respray only for it to start looking tired again that is putting me off and the fact I have nowhere to garage it either.

I dont intend on ever selling the car so whatever I do, I have to be happy with it. It would be nice to keep it original, engine conversion aside  but even that has been done so it can be put back to original fairly easily.

I said me and thinking dont mix, I just dont know what to do
Although, even my Mum is telling me to go for Calypso Red 8O

Thanks mate and youre right, the Calypso is lovely. Although I dont have a cab, Ive got a 2dr 325iS which is why Im not sure about the Calypso suiting it.

My bad, I read it wrong....
I can see how it's a difficult decision you picked some gorgeous colors! Thats a hard decision on a saloon....

But if you went with blue, I personally prefer Aktisblau metalic. That's the color of my 318i, and it's gonna get resprayed that color...eventually

Yep - but you could get it lacquered if you had it re-sprayed red.

Its Chris' Sport I compared mine with at Rockingham a couple years back - when Simon owned it.
This is what mine looked like shortly after buying it and the colour was nothing like Simon/Chris'...

Ive been told by a number of bodyshops that even the UV resistant lacquer wont help, but then some have said it will - its the uncertainty thats putting me off keeping the brilliant red.

Whilst the Estoril Blue and the other colours (or shades - 320Touring  8) ) mentioned are nice (although BRG cars are unlucky :D ) Im going to keep it an E30 colour whatever happens.

I nearly bought a 318is in Laser Blue - looked bad in the photo, but really nice in the flesh.

I put Metallic Blue in the poll because I cant remember which blue its was I liked more - it was either Laser blue or whichever blue the Motorsport Cabs were - if someone has a pic that would be great.

I think you should keep it brilliant red!!!

Ive just had my M3 totally resprayed due to pink bits of plastic and by the time I costed up a pink roof, pink spoiler, pink boot and pink bumpers I decided to get the whole lot done!!!

You wont regret it but if you painted it a different colour you may!!! Ive failed to see a good colour change paint job unless you are willing to strip the whole car down and spend a small fortune!!

Do you have any pics? It would be good to see them, maybe even help make my mind up - I need all the help I can get

If I do change the colour, it will be a full strip down - it would be the only way I would be happy with it.
