depends what speed you will be drifting at..
3.91 is prolly best out of a tech 2 sport

well im only starting out, s i imagine ill be starting at relatively low speeds, but hopefully build up to higher speeds! will a 3.91 diff outof a tech 2 sport give me greater acceleration and lowr top speed? direct fit?

3.91 is the most common ratio of LSD, you might be better off with a 4.1(slightly better acceleration and lower top speed) ratio LSD but they are rare and this will probobly be reflected in the price ?
3.91 should be a good all round ratio

4.10 is a lot of fun to drift with but not so much fun on a long trip

1987 2.7l e30 m20b27 supercharging
1991 3.5l e30 m30b35 it is dead so sad

Ideally you'll be wanting a 4.10 lsd since that's the same ratio the 318iS had originally, however they are rare and pricey when you do find them for sale.
The larger case 3.91 lsd from the Tech 2 325i Sports is the closest ratio and should be fine for drifting, but you will find acceleration is a touch slower but top speed is improved.
Alternatively if your car is solely for drifting you could find a 4.27 open diff and weld it up, but that's not gonna be much use on the road.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think i might try and seek out a 4.10 LSD, as i dont really fancy a reduction in acceleration from the 3.9. When you say the 4.10 will increase acceleration and reduce top speed, how much is this by? like i mean will i get to 60 a second quicker and will it knock 15mph off my top end for example? cheers

A lot of people don't rate BMW lsd's for drifting as there not very predictable and i think they only have about 50%lock? Most people i know who have had bmws and drifted them have said the lsd's are no good and have all welded them. Iv'e personally not used a lsd im still on an open diff

putting on a 4.1 lsd will not affect your acceleration/top end. You say you have a 318is so therefore if you dont already have a LSD you will have an open diff installed and its ratio will be 4.1Ammaco wrote:Thanks for the advice guys. so why not weld your current 4.1 open diff??? Its the cheapest option. Also as has already been mentioned the only way to increase acceleration will be to put in 4.27 diff but this will only be slight and only reduce the top end by 7/8 mph
anything lower than your current 4.1 in your Is will decrease your accerleration

the best lsd for drifting the 1.8 is to find a decent 325, and take the engine, gearbox, prop, axle, disk brakes, etc etc and fit it up in your car.
i can drift my 2.5 in the wet with a standard diff, just not in the dry unless i propper cane it, but i wont go there.
