Bit stupid running away from it really, though I guess people can do stupid things when they're panicking.

I read about this on MIG today as well. One of the people who was there with Chip said that the accident was on one of the last corners and is blind so if you came round that and met a car in the middle of the road you'd be in a whole heap of trouble hence he moved it.
There was no oil, it was coolant etc.
Only Chip can tell us how it happened etc as there are loads of rumours flying around including some he wrecked a Porcshe and killed some bikers! lol

cant find it on passionford now, must have been removed, there was a lot of speculation and general bollocks being talked earlier about what had happened,i think it had been blown out of proportion.

It's not just front end damage - offside rear has been crushed right in. That shell is dead!

OH dear, very sad
Andrew

Andrew
ive spoken to chip (no i wasnt with him)
it seems he crashed off at the Baby Karussell - car was checked over and was mildy leaking coolant NOT oil, so they decided to limp to the end as opposed to staying in ppls way.
stories of bikers crashing on the ensuing oil slick are greatly exaggerated.

Hmmm
Well the story I've heard goes as follows:
He tried to leave the car park, the marshals stopped him, and he was taken away by the police for leaving the scene of an accident
A trail of fluid was left and 4 bikers went down on it
Of course thats only one point of view
Whatever driving away is a stupid thing to do at the ring, fair enough to move the car a little further down if you're in a blind spot, but not to drive off - even if you're not leaking fluid, the marshalls will presume you're trying to evade paying for armco etc
Also someone I knew, and a good friend of many ringers died a couple of years back after slipping on someones leaked fluid.

Hello lads, im back online now
NO oil leaked from my car at all, not one drop, the sump was completely undamaged, as Nick says the only thing that dripped from my car was a bit of water from the engine with a very weak summer coolant mix, and 90% of that ended up right next to the barrier instnatly as thats where the radiator broke, car was stationary idling for a couple of minutes while we checked it over and made sure it was safe to move, the reason a few dribbles came out in the ring car park i would imagine is they ran off the undertray as its uphill, it wasnt still leaking from the radaitor itself at that point, and it was NOT oil, only water.
Not sure what happened with the accident itself, the back didnt come round, the front washed out, ive no idea why as wasnt going any quicker than on any previous lap, tales of 4 bikers coming off are all made up as far as im aware, and the picture on ben's site of the gsxr isnt even the bike that felt my "oil" (i hadnt actaully leaked any) caused him to come off was actually black and he wasnt injured at all, just a few minor scrapes to the bike itself from touching down.
I wasnt trying to "do a runner" you have no chance of that, the car's shell was bent and the wheels wouldnt turn fully in the arches, i could hardly of made a dash for the main road and outrun the german police in it all the way back to the belgium border or anything, LOL
I left the actual accident scene as i didnt feel it was a safe place for my car to be "parked" so as it was still driveable i limped it home with the hazards on, i was going to turn into the carpark on the right handside as its easier to manouvre around as the one on the left was so crowded, but the marshall directed me into the car park on the left instead.
Car was insured, have left green card details, there was approx 12" of damage to the barrier itself, but the barrier was pushed back and apparently they have to remove 32 metres of it and reseat it all to fix it, cost for that is rumoured to be about 2500 euros so probably wont cheer my insurance company up.
On the plus side, i had a fantastic holiday, we got in 35+ laps in the beamer and it was performing superbly, the H&R cup kit was a perfect match, and we made sure everything else was in perfect order like all new wheel bearings all round etc.
EVERYONE who went in the car thought the handling was amazing, and both me and mark were genuinely suprised at just how good it was.
Struggled a bit powerwise on certain sections but TBH im used to driving the ring in a cossie with twice the power, so the bmw was always at an unfair disadvatnage in terms of my opinion of its straight line speed.
All in all an awesome experience though and would certianly encourage others not to be put off by it.
Bit of a shame about all these internet rumours but TBH im not surprised.
By the time i had finished talking to the officials the story i heard was:
4 bikers came off, 1 dead, and a porche as well.
The porche in fact came off about 30 mins earlier on a earlier part of the track and i had seen it getting loaded onto a low loader when i came round before i crashed, the other 3 bikes didnt seem to exist at all and the biker who "died" didnt even have a bruise on him, and if he DID hit any oil it certainly wasnt mine!
Bit dissapointed that Ben Lovejoy would cheapen his website with rumours and untruths and actually quite annoyed he started posting pictures of dead bikers to try and ram home to me how bad it was to drive with leaking oil as that is NOT something i would ever do, shame as other than that his site is quite a good resource, but i think he has made himself look a bit foolish now by posting rubbish, he even put lies about me being taken to the police station which isnt true, the only place i went with the police was to a cashpoint as i didnt have even enough euros on me for a cup of coffee let alone a taxi home or to pay to get the car moved etc (although in the end the lads at JC motorsport kindly trailored it away for me free of charge
thanks lads! ).
If ben would like to inspect the car himself to check for oil leaks then get him to ask me for the address of where it is awaying the insurance company and he can go round and look himself!
On the plus side though, all the (unwarrented) slagging off of myself has at least hammered home to people how bad driving with an oil leak could be, so if it stops someone else doing that and saves a bikers life than i myself like all bike enthusiasts would view that as FAR more important than if a few people think wrongly of me, so no real harm done.

Wahay chip is alive and can carry on building that XE'd beast. Sounds like you had fun, shame it ended like that, lucky you had insurance. Did you get the car trailored back to the UK? One alpina was already bent before that little coming together wasn't it, so i don't think theres much good left in them

Gutting thing is the car is still in germany and the insurance company are BOUND to scrap it there locally, so i wont get a chacne to buy the "salvage rights" to it, so the wheels and interior etc are all going to end up in a german scrapyard!

Yeah its a bit gutting not being able to keep the salvage, as that would have easily made my mind up what "ring car" to get next, as i would have got another E30 if i had all those spare bits for it.
Not sure what im going to pick now though, probably wont even thinking about it till around new year as im going to go passenger only later in the year now (we go twice a year), so no rush.
