I have a 318is e30 with a noisy engine. There is currently a 318is engine on ebay that is from an e36. My old engine is an M42 and the engine on ebay is also an M42 so i guess it will fit????

No experience of this one, but I think I'm right in saying the basic engine is the same, but a lot of external parts and a couple of internal parts have to be swapped over.

I'm sure I read something recently about there being something which causes problems, maybe crank sensor? If I remember where I read it I'll elaborate.

E36 version will have serpentine belt instead of V belts, so this could affect the crank sensor arrangements.

It was in the Feb Total BMW - there's a section on the M42 / 44 engines which referes to the 1.9 having nowhere to bolt the front TDC sensor, and also needing an extra hole to be tapped for either the ECU or gauge temp sensors, as there is only one.
The sump is also different, as is the alternator mounting.
Whether this is also the case for a 1.8 from an E36 I dont know.

There's a guy selling a 318is with a 1.9 E36 engine in the For Sale section.
You could PM him and see what the problems are?
Username is something like MattM44is though if you look through the Cars For Sale forum for a couple of minutes I'm sure you'll find him.

Was in a scrapyard today, and thought of this thread when I came across an E36 4 pot with it's radiator missing.
The front of the engine had a serpentine belt for the water pump, altenator, etc., and an ordinary V belt for the steering pump. There was a toothed wheel behind the crank pulleys, and a crank position sensor mounted on a bracket in a very similar manner to an E30.
