As mentioned previously, I am new to the E30 game. Obviously the M3 engine is highly tuned as standard, but is there anything I should be looking to do to the engine? Don't see much mention of induction kits and and the like, but what about a remap? Will this give a substantial gain? I know it does with turbo'd cars so I assume perhaps not with cars such as M3's.

Also, should I be filling up with Optimax like in the S3? (Which incidentally has had a remap, and on the rolling road yesterday was kicking out 273 bhp!! :D )

i have no 1st hand experience on m3s but have picked up a few things

firstly any gains will cost a lot but will be worth it!!

following are options that i know of

. standalone managemnet and remap-eg alpha-n, MBE ETC..
. CARBON AIRBOX-sounds unreal-cost also unreal -circa Ԛ£1k
. cams
. headwork???
. grp n exhaust-loud, or other aftermarket system
. internal mods like upgrade to 2.5l

this lot can see 260hp plus, and a sound like a racing car-i mean like an actual racing car, not just a car with an exhaust. car will really shift but ull also have a really dented wallet.

The engine on the m3 is VERY expensive to tune.

I have been quoted Ԛ£7500 + vat to get it to race spec.

A remap will get some power as apparantly the EVO 1 engine was just a remap but go further than that and ... lots of dosh.

Getting to 260 bhp would cost bucks! I have been in a 270 bhp M3 and I can say its worth every penny given the noise and the phenominal acceleration.

Upgrade the cams, get bigger throttle bodies and a remap and the gains will be very good.

M3Pilot is the man to speak to on here. His old 235bhp M3 was serioulsy quick. It blew my C2 2.7 away!

Karans more or less covered it. depends on what you want. If you go for cams and a remap you will lose some torque but will gain in top end and BHP. If you want to improve driveability ie torque across the rev range Alpha N (engine management) seems to be the way to go. You don't have to have a carbon airbox to run Alpha N. have a look on www.s14.net. Countless threads on tuning the s14 engine.

Like has already been said it's mainly down to how much you want to spend.
Remapping the ECU works well and will give you some gains, but the car will feel much more driveable.

Cams work well but some will narrow the power band depending on how there set up. Your choice of cams will be dictated once again by your budget and what sort of power your after. Personally if your serious then there is only one choice Motorsport cams. These work extemely well and flow way more than Schrick, but they are hella expensive and will never clear stock pistons. But you need to be doing a serious engine and have deep pockets if you going that root.

On a stockish engine I would say go for a 284/276 Schrick or a pair of 290/290 from e30shop.de that should give you more at the top end and I believe they will still clear stock Evo 3 pistons.

One of best gains is getting rid of the AFM using either a piggy back Alpha N like I do or a new EMS like Motec or MBE. The car will have much great torque lower down and also gain pretty much everywhere.
It's a win win situation.
