If it IS only the tensioner, it's about Ԛ£25 from the dealers... fitting is a piece of cake, simply unscrew the old one, and re-fit the new one. Done.

See this site for more info...

Yeah, meant to be an easy job. Going to fit an e36 tensioner to mine soon as they are apparantely better. Hope its a good car btw and that all goes well. Seems ok mileage but the no history could be a bad thing.

You can ONLY get an E36 tensioner now anyway... they've stopped producing the E30 unit.

Could be a heat shield vibrating, a noisy tappet... anything really. You'll have to check it out first.

Sounds like a bit of a heap to be honest, to possess no service history is quite a pathetic achievement, buggered paint work, new tensioner and god knows what else is needed. Give it a proper check over when you see it, if theres any stickers from an old garage on/in the car, give them a ring, and check what the mileage was when they had it in, I caught some good for nothing f*ckhead out with this, was quality, he pulled a truly priceless face. Good luck!

tbh i have doubts about it too,, he sounds like a bit of a prick. though tbh ive got a mint engine sitting outside in the crashed car... so even if engine requires compleate overhaul, ill put my existing one in,,, (will need help though :( ) and then have that engine as a summer project to rebuild... i finish uni in 6 weeks  will rebuild the shitter engine and put it in and make it a mint machine. as long as the shell is solid,, i wanna respray it anyway, i want a mint engine, and good interior, all i really need is a cheap heap and ive got all the mint parts needed from my car winkeye

i will be looking for about the 500 mark for a semi decent one that will do me for the time being :) he does however have 4 old skool beemers outside his house so he must be a bit of an enthusiast...

the one i saw yesterday he wouldnt accept less then 600 so thats too much.

anyway,,, worth a look at least eh? its not too far from me...

wish me luck!

New tensioner won't always cure the rattle mate. Could be worn guides etc. Ask yourself, if a new tensioner is only 25 notes and a ten minute job, why didn't he do it? Could be that he has and it hasn't helped.

You finish Uni in 6 weeks!? - you lucky bastard. If you are going to be doing a transplant then hairy muff, but its probably a total false economy, why dont you sell your engine, and spend extra on a non-dog of a car?
Remember to do the old trick of driving in a straight line and taking hands of the wheel, always entertaining listening the the owners bullshit reason as to why the car is determined to go left.

Me - "its pulling badly to the left"
Owner - "oh.......hmmm.....the road isnt really flat"
Me - This is the M4 mate, wouldnt look out of place in Holland"
Owner - "well its definately nothing to do with that crash i haven't told you about"

lol at the holland remark...

yeah ithink we do finish end of march thats what i heard,, :) but study for exams,, and considering i should be in a lecture as we speak,,, i think i need as much revision as ican get in winkeye

yeah i suppose, i think he doesnt have time, space etc, he said its been sitting there for a while as hes got his other projects being looked after...

if worse comes to worse, ill offer a silly price and walk away,,, its worked once lol 70Ԛ£ car :D which turned out to be a minter!! (replacement ignitiion coil, 20 quid and 10 mins  (mk2 polo btw) )

No way! I bought one for Ԛ£25 and sold it to Mark for Ԛ£20 at the Donnington show last year (november).

Sytners... must have been a genuine Alpina tensioner...

 Just might have been, think the rest of the parts must have been straight from the factory on special order :x
