In the course of a rolling restoration (318i Lux Auto) I've been mulling over the front bumper. I've seen this bumper on a few other facelift E30 - instead of the two long slots below the number plate, there is only one, in the lower position, and this slot is filled with a body coloured blanking panel.
1: The part number on the rear is 51711953645 -this matches with a part showing on realoem, which looks more like the grille insert that other E30 bumpers have, not a blanking insert like that which is actually fitted.
2. Assuming it's just a little error in the schematic, will a black grille insert (they seem to be 51711953645 and fitted to six cylinder cars and above) be a straight drop in fit to replace it?
I am actually taking it back to fully standard, including sticking back on the 318i badge on the rear. But I just do like the grille rather than the smooth cover and would like to put it in to improve the look of the bumper. It was no work at all to unclip it.

Bit the bullet and ordered the part. Part number 51711953609 is a straight swap for the blanking plate and looks a lot better in the M40 Lux front bumper.
