Has anyone had issues with aftermarket cams from eBay and the like? I used one previously with no issues but today it screwed me big time - looks like there is extra material which cause it to rub against the bearing block when it warmed up a bit.

It melted the locating tab off the pulley and caused it to spin when I attempted to start it… not sure of scale of the damage but its frustrating to say the least!

Did you try to turn it by hand first ?

Mart.

Several times! It rotated beautifully again and again, even when I primed the head of oil it was fine, not nasty grinding noises. It was only after running the cam in the issue was apparent :/

Been back out and can see four or so wobbly rockers so the valves are done for sadly.

All that work for it to come back off :(

as you sat the valves could be bent & fingers crossed there's no more damage.

Looks more like a lubrication failure, very dry. It would turn nicely when installed with a little oil but soon as it came under load it would burn out.

All comments by me should be taken in the right sprite, Jack Daniels is fine.

"Melted the locating tab off the pulley" the steel pin??

Is that black silicone sealer? Lots there if so, it could have contributed to your problem

That almost looks like someone has put way too much silicone sealant in and forced it inwards with the Camshaft oil seal.

At the very most you only need a small smear where the castings meet

It does look like it had run hot, Although I think the heat generated by the cam rubbing against the bearing is why it looks so dry. There wasn’t any oil starvation issues previously so unless the new cam was blocked inside I’m not sure what happened with it.

I’m talking to them on eBay at the moment and they want the cam and vehicle details and the OE cam details as well so we’ll see how it that plays out.

It’s looks like its plastic on the M40 cam sprocket, I haven’t really looked at it in detail so it could be metal but can check the other one when I take it off again.

There’s no silicone at all in them photos, are you referring to the cam seal that’s deformed because of the heat?

Oh that, that’s metal not silicone. Maybe from the swarf from the edge of the cam/bearing being drawn in there
