318i - 318IS Engine and Cluster questions and doubts

Hi guys,

Hope all well.

I bought recently a 318i (1985) but with engine swap, M42B18 from another E30 318IS.

To be honest, I do not know much from this engines, only what I know is from this forum\site that is helping a lot, but, I belive someting is wrong with my engine and cluster.

Engine::
At idle, the engine shake a bit and it smells a intesive smoke. When I give a bit gas the shake stop... only at idle.
No smoke with color (blue (oil), wite(headgasket), black(excessive petrol).

Previous owner confirm new engine mounts, injectors cleaned and tested.

I checked here to change the chain tensioner... could I put the M44 one? it is only take out the bolt, take the old one and put the new one and screw the bolt? easy as it is?

Cluster::
My cluster, the RPM is dead, also the petrol gauge is not reading well. Foto below (with the car working)
Anything that I can check?


Can I change the RPM with another with econometer? it is plug and play from another E30?

Hi mate and welcome to the zone !!Check for air leaks and also try and look at the coil; packs as sometimes these can go wrong , a good second hand set will be fine.
Ask as many questions as you like mate, this is why the forum is here
You seem very handy with the "tech" so put it to good use and lets see some/a lot more of your car please ??
