I just tried recently to buy a tap and die set on eBay. When going to Pay Now the price had gone up £10. I questioned this and was informed that since the 1st January ebay has added VAT to anything being bought from abroad. Bearing in mind the advert had a Union Jack on it and was advertised as posted from Leicester I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience. I have told them I don’t want it on principle. I prefer our system of paying the price as advertised rather than the USA system of tax being added at the till.

There's been some change in the rules from HM customs and excise. I'm not sure if it's a consequence of this country's collective act of self harm, finally enabled a week ago, but there have been reports of foreign companies no longer prepared to deliver to the UK, since they are now required to register with UK customs and excise if they want to do so.
The rules generally have always been that you export less VAT at your local rate, and apply VAT at the local rate when the goods are imported.

If I'm selling something from Ireland to UK, I can't add UK VAT and customs to the price - so I think this is something you'll just need to get used to if buying from outside the UK. I think in your case its a slightly different issue and its a seller from outside the UK setting their account profile as being in the UK - which is irritating. I've been caught out a few times with that.

As an aside, the cost of buying cars and parts from the UK has just jumped so much that's its killed off car imports to here - everything is now 31% more expensive (without accounting for clearance fees!). Am having to switch from a UK amazon account to the German one, same with eBay - although we can still buy from NI without any extra taxes or charges.

I’ll have to look into whether it’s cheaper to get kit bought by my mother in NI or my brother in the South.

If your brother is in Ireland, then NI will be cheaper. You'd be hit for the same duty and VAT when posting it over to your UK address - customs declarations are needed for all parcels posted to the UK now. You can always under-declare the value, but then you're screwed on shipping insurance if it goes missing or gets damaged.

If you read the small print in most courier terms and conditions you will find that "car parts" amongst other random items are excluded from their insurance cover regardless of whether you have paid extra for the cover or not

Yeah that's probably true - although they've honoured claims for me in the past. Think I'll just need to fill the touring up with bits when I eventually tale it back home!

I’ve still got my passport from over 40 years ago an it wasn’t blue. It was black. Don’t know where this blue passport came from

Are you still using a paper licence?

If so you can apply for a IDP from the Post Office for £5.50.

Apparently if you have an old paper licence it is valid in the EU but must be exchanged if you reside outside the UK for more than 2 years.

You must also exhange your paper licence by 2033 for a local one.

If you lose your licence you will get a new "local" country licence after they check up if you are a villain or on the run!

Yes, paper licence, and a green one at that. I know I can get an IDP for £5.50, but that's £5.50 I'd rather spend on a bottle of red when I get across the channel, not waste on Johnson's project to allow his mates to still hide their often ill gotten wealth.

Well, it’s not all doom and gloom, for those that voted for it there’s now no VAT on tampons that they allegedly use.

I have both lol, to be honest if you are quibbling about £5.50 that to be honest is quite sad. Stop bitching and get with the project, lots of beautiful places to holiday in within the UK, even Yorkshire but the locals can be miserable buggers.......

£5.50 here, another £5.50 there, GB badges for the cars and trailers, 10% on food bills, higher fuel bills because of depressed £, etc., etc. The list goes on and on and for no tangible gain whatsoever, except for disaster capitalists and those with multiple offshore accounts.
On the other hand, anything that encourages UK holidays is good for me, 'cause that's the business I make my money in these days.

No tangible benefits for the common man, but it lets some people feel like they've won something.
Personally, it means I no longer have the right to live and work in the country where I was born and raised (not that it really matters now that I'm on the other side of the world).

Well if the size 18 English lasses eat less then they can save 20% on their food bills that's a gain for a start, GB sticker can be made out of Gaffa Tape, its not all doom and gloom and stop being jealous of others who invested and as you mentioned you will be making money out of the stay at home vacationers so to be honest it benefits you financially.

I might be able to offer employment to my son, if it grows permanently. He's currently an engineer for a multinational company producing aircraft parts, both civil and military, and he informs me that they're actively thinking of closing their UK factories.

He can always move abroad, my youngest lived and worked in Frankfurt and is now living and working in Hamburg.

My Nephew who moved from Poland to Germany to work for BMW is in China or was setting up a production line for them.
