My latest post on my build thread shows my engine harness I've just cleaned and reerapped. Does anybody know what these are for? The were unpluged but are able to be connected. There's also 1 at the other end of harness but only 1 plug and nowhere to connect it.

It would help if you gave some idea of where in the car we are looking, what colour the wires are, but I'll assume it's the engine loom and the wires are grey/black.
If so, and your car does not have a cat. and lambda sensor, then they should be connected. There is a potentiometer, under a red cap, on your air flow meter, which is used to set the idle CO level. This wire carries the adjustable voltage from this pot. to the engine ECU.
If you do have a cat. and lambda sensor, the wires should not be connected, since the signal from the lambda sensor is used to control CO.
If so, and your car does not have a cat. and lambda sensor, then they should be connected. There is a potentiometer, under a red cap, on your air flow meter, which is used to set the idle CO level. This wire carries the adjustable voltage from this pot. to the engine ECU.

It's on the engine harness across the bulkhead under the long plastic trim. It has a catalyst and lambda sensor but no adjustment screw on the air flow metre.
Wire colour is black and white (arguably grey)

That's definitely the connector for the CO pot, and on your car should be left disconnected.
Some late M40 engined E30s, after lambda sensors and emissions equipment became standard, were fitted with AFMs that omitted the pot. for cost reasons.
