......was it as bad as you originally thought? Did you get it sorted? HOW MUCH DID IT COST!!

Just been cleaning my car, which is a G-plate sport. Found a big rust bubble under the black thing that holds the rear numberplate on where it is screwed in. This is not the end of the world as far as I know because while it looks horrible it is only the size of an old 50p and can probably be sorted easily enough. Whilst checking round at the rest of the minor rust niggles (Edge of bootlid bit scabby, tiny bit on edge of drivers door etc) I found some dreaded rot under the kit. It is on the offside rear wheel arch, nearest the door, and the bottom rivet is loose because where it should be screwed in is rotten. I did the obvious thing, curled up on the drive in the foetal position and sobbed for a bit. I need you to regale me with tales of your mtec rust woes so I can feel a bit less bad and know that it is not the end.

ahh another discovers what we all preach! All sports rust under the kit, it's a sad fact about them.

Whip it all off and have a good look.

Hence theres no such thing as a mint sport now! They all need welding at some point! :D

The car I have as a track car had an M-tech II kit, it had been fitted since 1989, and has 153k on the clock, and no rust under the kit...plenty of it elsewhere though!! Under the fusebox, and arches, but at the top of the arch!

You truly have to remove all m tec panels :o , then the truth will be revealled 8O

Mine required.

New rear panel

rear arch replacement

internal sill welding

New front wings

New sunroof panel

Boot floor under battery replaced

Scuttle panel repair both sides

Full body respray

No change from Ԛ£2k, but it was worth it to me, i now have the knowledge that every corner , nuck & cranny has been inspected & repaired.

Good luck with yours

2 new wings
front floor pans welding
rear arches both sides

and some on rear panel

Sills seem solid

I'm hoping i'll do this when it comes off the road in the next week or so for the 2.7 also. Do it all in one go, i can see it being off the road for a year or so! Money, money, money :?

Both my rear arches are corroded straight through and are gonna need replacing. Any idea what a "Reasonable" price would be to get them replaced?

Naylor had his arches done on his sport for Ԛ£450 which seems reasonable to me for the work involved. It looked a top job too and his arches were bad!

Hey Simon13, did naylor get both arches replaced for Ԛ£450 or was it just welded? i got a quote to get bot inner arches replaced for Ԛ£800 or just cut out and welded for Ԛ£300. to me it sounds really steep but all the garages ive been to have said its a big job and thats why it'll cost so much. cheers for your help.

tbh honest i can't remember i think they were just repaired and blown in, but don't quote me

In all honesty i'm thinking of finding a very good 318is shell and re shelling mine, all i would have to is get my M-tech kit sprayed to match.

better than the heart ache of getting it all repaired and done and then finding later on it's coming back. Plus it could work out cheaper long term, depending on how much of the work u could do yourself

Ive been thinking the same thing, mine has rust in all the above areas but there not really visable cosmetictly exept for the roof which has already been done twice and came back through in six months

Would be really costly to have it all done properly.

Trouble is mines a tech 1 so finding a mint crome bumper shell is going to be well tricky

I'm glad I dont have an M Tech kit then! My 318is is pretty much solid with only minor surface scab on leading edge of bonnet and the now dead door:

I have the joy of having to replace drivers door, outer sill beneath it, the little outer one behind that and have to pull/fill/paint the bottom of the B panel.

Some dumb bitch drove into me on a roundabout!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Seems like the perfect time to fit a full M Tech kit then.. Cover all sins. Plus the M Tech II cars look excellent in shiny spec, Brilliant Red.. winkeye
