I'm looking for a replacement heat shield 51481932391 for the cabby.

I've found one or two but they are different part numbers and apparently don't fit the vert,

Anyone know what the difference is between a standard E30 saloon, a touring and the cabby versions of these shields - they all "look" the same
but maybe I'm missing something.

Oh right - maybe I can answer my own question!

The cabby has an extra cross member under the tunnel, so the heat shield is shaped to accomodate this.

The cabby heat shield is steel rather than aluminium, its about 10 times heavier and forms part of the body structure

Thanks for that..I knew someone would have a precise answer...yes mine is heavy- weight steel....so I think it might be an electroplate job...to get it rust free and shiny!!

I found a couple second hand but as bad as mine really - so I cleaned mine up and painted it with High Temp spray - I guess one day I'll build a giant zinc plating bath.... winkeye winkeye

Would appreciate any links to second hand ones as the ones on eBay currently are all non cab versions.
Thanks!

Found a breaker who says this comes from a cabbie... yet to confirm the part no but does this look like the correct shape for a cabbie?
Thanks!

Looks like ally...should be clearly a galvanised finish on steel to be for the cabby.

I had a quick zoom and its not ally, you can make out the corrosion from the steel edges near the holes, ally corrosion looks quite different.

Mart.
Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.

I went ahread and ordered it anyway and it arrived today.
The part weights 1.3kg - not exactly very heavy? It does look like it's made from some light weight steel material and I couldn't find any part no. stampted anywhere.

Just had a facepalm moment.
I realised that BMWFans/ETK displays part weight too.

Seems like the cab version weights 4.1kg.
The others 1.3kg. Which is what I have. Clearly the wrong part.

Back to the drawing board...

I also noticed the rear section is pop riveted...that must be a give away.

I noticed the pop-riveted section too, but thought if it was galvanised steel, ideally you’d galvanise the two pieces before assembly & riveting or bolting is the only way to fix together.

I feel lucky now, i had just recently had mine off the car and shot blasted and i painted it with galvanising paint, i don't like the finish . i wanted it to be properly galvanised but couldn't find anyone, so gave up.
but i now know it wasn't that easy to find a replacement either
