i've got a B&M short shifter with a garagistic DSSR, weighted gear knob as well as all new bushes (delrin) nice & short & very precise.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

Agree entirely, a short shift and new bushes made the gearbox much more pleasant to use. I bought the car from a lad who said he just could not get one with it, I found it had that problem, the power steering was not working, and there was excessive free movement on the brake pedal. Putting that right and adding a quicker rack transformed the car, I sometimes wonder what he would think of it now.
I've never tried a short shift, however my standard linkage has been rebuilt so there's no slop. I absolutely love it, with the long throw you have to be more aggressive but also use finesse to do quick changes, it makes you work but feels so satisfying throwing it into the gears. Maybe a short shift would feel lazier, perhaps better for a commute, but when hitting a nice b road not so rewarding and less aggressive, just my opinion having not driven short shift yet!
