If i recall correctly that shape was in early e30s but also in various other bmws of the time. The logo looks like a modern take on the old motorsport logo found on CSL and batmobiles and other motorsport variants.
To me the one in your photo looks like a new reproduction based on older style.

it's a an early prefacelift knob (mushroom) that's had a makeover with a twist , it would look good on a tech-1 sport
