My cabby had an advisory for a windscreen chip - no biggy, but it is in pretty lousy shape, nearly 30 years of hacking about has left it covered in small chips and scratches - not great at night.

I've found a couple of "Autoglass" type replacements, one for 150 euros and the other for 350 incl. fitting.

Anyone have opinions about these? should I go for the BMW real deal at €350 (no fitting) or are the cheapies much the same?

I have green tint....

and any ideas on fitters, I guess most have little or no knowledge of these cars, or experience fitting glass, don't want the car boogering up by some teenager in a onesie.

the inlay is black and all looks good - so does the rubber as far as I can tell, and yes, I have cover.

I think you can specify what screen you want and maybe pay the extra but it may need to have a crack.

If the inlay is black then I think thats shadow line.

Don't waste money on an oem screen, glass is glass at the end of the day.

Fitting an E30 screen is an easy DIY job, especially with the correct (£20 or so) fitting tool for the locking strip. It's perfectly possible to fit the black type locking strip without the tool, but it puts fingers and paintwork at risk to some degree.
Back in the day, I was advised to avoid genuine BMW glass, since it was reputed to be softer than most, and more susceptible to pitting from road dirt.
You give your location as Germany, so if you're under German insurance, I don't know quite what the situation is, but in the UK, glass is usually replaced or repaired by insurance at nominal cost.

I'd read somewhere about OEM glass being soft - and yes I have a small crack on the screen - apart from loads of smaller damage.

I'm in Germany but have a UK derived, Europe wide, open ended green card policy - with glass cover - I'll have a chat with them and see what they say - but at €150 for a screen, I could well tackle this myself.

Check that the replacement comes with the mounting for the mirror. This is convertible specific.

I found it a really easy job to do. Doing yourself also allows you to properly sort any rust you might find.

Reckon I'll give it a shot when I've finished rebuilding the entire front suspension!

Any one know if you can get bronze-tint screens new. Had a bit of a hunt around but drawing a lot of blank looks. Clear or green is what I can see.
