https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E30-323i ... SwBoxaiw-U

In the listing it's an X plate, which is 1981/82

Car's registered 4/7/83

He thinks the plates original.

323i sport?

Just a point here but you can put any plate on any car as long as it doesn’t make it appear newer than it is
So it’s possible to place a 1982 released plate an a 1984 car, which this car actually is!

Looks a bit suspect to me, a lot of speculation but could be just a couple of photos of a tired old 320 Especially the way he doesn’t want to communicate by official eBay channels.

Recent gumtree advert for a 325 was an obvious clone of a legitimate eBay advert. Lot of scam artists targeting the E30 at the moment

I've no doubt it's a 323i, and it's registered as one..But saying it's a Sport? I wasn't aware that they made any 323i sports..

Can't tell from the photos whether it's got a dogleg box or not.

Seller thinks the plate is original, which it obviously isn't.

Has no mot history I've checked, so been off the road many years.

i have a 52k mile 325i 4dr switchable auto with the same interior pattern .

try finding some mot history on this fooka , the keys were lost many years ago and it really is a time warp inside looking at the lack of wear n tear , even the rubber 4 spoke has very visible fake leather grain on the top half . .. i cranked it over but not fired up ... i'll investigate when the weather temps pic up but i do want to get it fired up before i sell the donk or break it for bits .

The ad is genuine as is the seller (if a little deluded) I’ve seen the car
It does have a dogleg box and it’s a 1985 and it’s very rusty!!!

Out of curiosity how did you get it as a 1985? The shot of the engine bay shows a few differences from my '84 323i. I assumed it was because it was an earlier low power version. '85 must have been one of the last

If they are that rare I will have to dig out the old dog-leg box that was fitted to mine. When the output bearing went I swapped it for the 'better' 'more modern' overdrive gearbox. LSD is still there though.

If I knew then what I know now

AFAIK Rhd production didn't start until the end of 1982 and all Rhd VIN started 7535.....

Lhd production started in November 1982 I think.

Yes it can be registered as an X plate but I doubt it is actually that as it would make it pre August 1982 as Y plate ran from Aug 83 to July 84. Therfore from what I know it is doubtful a 1982 Rhd 323i

I have never seen or heard of a "323i sport" as a model designation.

The number BAH 657X originates from Norwich DVLA office. If it was supposed to be a prototype why was it not registered at or near Reading and BMW HQ, like most E30 press cars etc.

I see he has pulled trhe ad as there was an error in the listing!

It is confusing as it is on an 82 plate and shows in the advert it is a 1984.
But the vacuum damping valve on the throttle bracket is an early one which makes it in line with the registration date of July 1983. The later 1984 versions were fatter then the flatter early ones.

All together a mixed up advert and the seller isn't really sure what he has..............

If it was built in April 1984 then the DVLA has the year of registration wrong as they have it as July 1983.

Anyone got the VIN to confirm the details?

DVLA is not always accurate, for example this is from a B reg chomie I had. It was on a private plates when I bought it, I then transfered the plates onto my Touring and the chromie was reregistered with M408XHW.

This was because it went to South Armagh in Northern Ireland during the 80's with an Army officer. Clearly driving a car around theose part on British plates would be ill advised so he registered it on Irish plates.

He then bought it back to England and left it on the Irish plates. I bought the car and ultimatley kept the number plates.

DVLA looked at the paperwork, and just saw 1995 on the documents (when it was re imported to England) and issued 1995 number plates when I transefered them.

Hi Jonnyfp

Thanks for confirming it as an 83. :D

It is indeed a very brave person if they intend to restore. Many many pieces for the older cars no longer available.
