Any recommendations? I have found references to three types, the BMW one for the South African market, a US one by Red46 LINK and one by Rally Drift LINK
I want this not because the car is lowered but because of the occasional unmade or badly surfaced roads encountered in historic rallying. A danger with a sump guard is that a stone gets wedged between the guard and the sump and punches a hole in the sump if the guard is deflected up. I therefore rule out the Red46 one as it has a large hole to get to the drain plug and one picture I have seen of the SA one also had a hole. Also the Red46 is expensive and the SA one looks heavy and difficult to find, so I am left with Rally Drift; does anyone have experience of this?
The only tank guard I found was this Kevlar one LINK which seems very expensive, are there any alternatives?

If I could stomach the cost then this would be the one for me!

The South African guard is by far the strongest, I ran one on my daily E30 years ago and ground out several times without damaging it, ripped holes in speed humps no problem.
The guards made from sheet steel are not much good other than a stone guard because as you say if something hits it hard it deforms and hits your sump anyway so you may as well just buy the cheapest one made from aluminium

Designed for those who have lowered their E30s a bit too far?

In my case it's because of the e34 sump I need to use on my s50. Sump sits low
