My 87 325i sports instrument cluster has been condemned as beyond economic repair. Therefore I’ve found a post face lift one will it fit and work in my car if I swap the coding chip over?

Thanks for your reply. So is it the coding plug the decides what warning lights
Are used as my car has ABS but having a cluster out of a non ABS equipped
car doesn’t matter as the coding chip will take care of it?

Coding chips are different between 4 pot and six pot. Does not affect the ABS.

ABS warning light is on flying leads, and clips into the back of any cluster.
6 pot clusters have a 'window' in the centre with a translucent area"check" on it. 4 pot clusters have a piece of plain black plastic in this position. Easily changed by unscrewing the single screw that locates the SI board retaining clip.
Fuel gauges for 55 litre and 62 litre fuel tanks are considerably different from each other, and using the wrong one will give VERY inaccurate readings. They are interchangeable by opening up the cluster and removing the small brass nut on the back of the case, directly behind the gauge.
It's worth checking the SI board batteries on any cluster that has been disconnected from a car battery for any length of time. Remove the board from the cluster, pop it in the freezer for half an hour, and measure the voltage across each battery.
