What would have been the options available in 1988 stereo wise as I think I may go back to an original unit for my car, its a chromie cabby if that makes any difference and I have a son in Germany that I could put to use in sourcing a unit.

There was no standard e30 head unit as such, i believe in the uk it was upto the dealer to provide the options. Blaupunkt would definitely be my choice as they suit german cars very well. I have a more modern Blaupunkt as it has all the connections i need, but if i could justify it i would buy something like this

There are specialists out there that can retro fit bluetooth to older stereos

Here's a thread you might want to have a read of - http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=189510
I went done another route despite having a Blaupunkt SQR88 sat in a cupboard, I've got amps powering my speakers and then a JL Audio Bluetooth receiver wired as in input device to the amps. I then just use an electric window kill switch to turn the amps on/off and have a blanking plate where the head unit would be. Looks as though I haven't got a stereo fitted at all. http://www.celstores.com/product/12860.html

Cheers guys, the BT device looks interesting.
I have a modern-ish Alpine HU in the car at the moment but when you have too much time on your hands they then mind wanders as to what you can do with the car and waste some money on.
I have someone in Germany so will ask them to keep an eye out on some old units at that one on eBay is expensive.

All the period headunits seem to be going for silly money now on eBay
